Land Requirement-- 1 acre for 20 goats

For a start-up how many goats we need - 20 Female and 1 male goats

What ratio of Male and Female is required - 20 female:1 male

What variety would be suitable for Madurai region - Osmanabadi and tallacherry

Where I can buy goats for starting the farm - You can buy from your nearby reputed farms or government farms or from any genuine seller which you know.

Specification for stage preparation and Design - 30 sq ft of shed area is required per adult goat, and the design is as per traditional goat farms, with the floor of shed elevated from the ground surface so that feces (dung) and urine get easily passed down.

Yes, there are lots of government schemes available for goat farming, and the main scheme is of NABARD that provides 25% subsidy for open caste and 33.3% subsidy for reserved category on total project cost. This is nationalized scheme for all states. The main condition of this scheme is that you have to avail loan from any nationalized bank as then only you are eligible for subsidy. Other schemes changes from state to state and so you have to visit your districts or villages livestock development office to know the present schemes in your areas. I can tell schemes only of Maharashtra state.

Hi, Mr.Lakshman,

Recently I established a goat farm with 2 acres of land for fodder. there are 35 animals in total with thalaserry, kanni , and jamnapari breeds. I am going for extension of the farm by adding one more shed for another 50 animals. Is it possible to grow graass for the additional animals, without having additional lands? pl reply to vanavilgoat@rediffmail.com.

Some features/advantages :

Cost of fodder will 2 to 3 rs.

Water cosumption 2 to 3 liters per kg where if you grow the same outside it will require min 80 liters.
