| Neeraj Bhatyal | Hi, I have read about your success story. I am from hilly areas of J&K and generally people used natural manure for few years. Suddenly they have moved to urea and other chemicals which are affecting the lives of many. How can you leverage the concept which you have implemented successfully or convince the farmers of this region to do organic farming? Am Partha Mandal, working for NABARD and in-charge of Burdwan district in West Bengal (WB). With lot of efforts and difficulty could manage to bring many a farmers under an umbrella popularly known as Farmers Producer Company Limited. Here in West Bengal, farmers alike any other parts of our country are in wretched conditions as they unable to fetch fair price, which is a common phenomenon. The basic problem is farmers are highly politicized and always looking for subsidies or money sops either from govt or from anyone who tries to help them integrate. One major difference between farmers from Mandya or Southern States in particular is pro-activeness and progressiveness respectively. As you know very well that before you started your journey many a farmers have already started organic farming on their own, however, due to lack of marketing skills they were stuck. As organic certification is quite costly and here in WB, small & marginal farmers are in majority and they do not have money power, these farmers are afraid of indulging any such activity. Though Burdwan is better known as rice bowl of the state and 2nd position in potato, these farmers are rotting. Besides, rice & potato, huge fresh vegetables are grown in this part of the country and there is a huge demand for it. I would request you to share the model on which your are working and made it successful. further, would like to take our farmers to your place for an exposure visit.
