Usage of 'round up' weedicide

We have plenty of weeds growth in our farm, and we have been recommended usage of Monsanto's "Round Up" Glyphosate weedicide. I have been told that it does not impact the soil, and that it removes weeds permanently

But surfing the internet I find that "Round Up" can ificantly impact the health of plants, animals, and probably human beings and can cause damage to soil fertility and plant growth

I would like to seek the opinion of experts in this forum on their views on usage of "Round Up". Aternately I would also like to know about home grown methods for removal of weeds

Shall appreciate hearing back from experts on my above queries

Dear ikp68,

Monsanto is a monster in terms of decimating our native seeds and is making a killing in selling their seeds and that too year after year, we may need to buy their seeds once we start using their seeds.

Anyway coming back to your problem, I can think of the following options:-
1. Use animals like Sheep/Goat or cows to trim(eat) the weeds.
2. Weeds mainly come because of the availability of water and sun. Have the areas covered with leaves or other waste and do not expose the areas to direct sunlight. This will also reduce the weeds over a period of time.
3. If you have enough labour or machinery, please try to cut them and use them as manure.

Dear Krishnan Glyphosate does a good job in eliminating unwanted plants. You do not need to cover the entire plant with the mixture just part of the leaf area. The plant will die after a week or so and will not re-grow as it finds its way to the roots. Because the soil is not disturbed more weed seeds will not germinate so quickly and easily. There are many different strengths available - so check and mix accordingly. Do not spray when rain is imminent within 24 hours or in windy conditions. Can also apply with paint brush or wand. Be sure to cover nearby valuable plants at spray time and try to spray close to the ground to prevent unwanted spray drift. You can add a red colour marker to mixture to easily see where spray has made contact. It is not highly poisonous to humans or animals but do wear gloves and a mask anyway.

It is not only ROUNDUP which harms the plans,animals and soil fertility , every herbicides effects the same.
As it is non selective herbicides and you can use it on any grassy weeds, and broad leaves weeds but use it in standing crops.

you should apply physical method to remove weeds if you dont want lose soil fertility etc.

Roundup is also not effective on Parthenium which is one of the most destructive weed.

The only solution for such weeds is to keep on removing them before they flower.

Another way to kill nuisance weeds - in the growing season -
first cut or mow the weeds
water them well - when they are actively growing
cover in black plastic - till under is covered in weeds(grass)
take off the plastic on a very hot day - you will have
death by sunburn!

We have tried summer weeding and it works and minimizes the weeds to a large extent, do not do any crop during peak summer and do a summer plough when you are sure its peak summer and no rain for the next 2-3 weeks. ensure the routine is done once every 3-4 days for 2 weeks ideally 4 times in 2 weeks before peak summer and leave it it helped us by more than 50% so it is manageable now.

The other reason for weeds is due to applying farmyard manure dung, when the cow grazes it consumes a lot of the weeds and the seeds which are not digested and germinates when applied to the farm, have a practices of getting couple of plastic barrel in the farm and dump the fresh dung in the barrel upto to 3/4 and fill the remaing with water and leave it for a day or two you will find all the seeds floating on top you can remove them or even if you apply they will not germinate.

If anybody has any good ideas please share the same, eliminating 100% weeds is not possible, but measure can be used to control them to a larger extent.

Weed problem

You can not think of controlling weeds and preserving environment.Any herbicide is a chemical and once it enters in soil or animal system it is going to affect environment.
Round up is a very strong herbicide and hence will have adverse effect on enviroment.This herbicede is used mainly on woody vegetaion where total weed keller like paraquat and others are not effective.

Weed management methodology will depend upon the situation in which you operate. For example:
1. If its fallow land infested with perennial weeds, deep summer cropping will work.
2. For control of rainy season grass weeds, keeping soil moist for a week or ten daysand ploughing field after the weeds germinate is another way.
3. Raising fast growing crops like sunhemp, dhaincha, pigeonpea and jwar etc for one or two season can minimise the weed seed bank in soil to a great extent.
4.Organic mulching is another effective means in widely spaced crops and where organic waste is abundently available say with growers of aromatic grasses and sugarcane.
There can be many more options, and it all depends upon the situation in whic you operate.
So many members have given nice tips which can be followed.

Nice to see some active discussions here, we also face similar issues with recurring weed growth, but we remove them through a combination of manual labour and weed cutters

Are there any permanent long term solutions to get rid of weeds once for all

As many people have rightly mentioned :
* Use sheep (not goat) ... sheep do not do much harm to your trees and prefer grazing off the ground.
* Certain crops are suitable for weeding by GEESE. Geese are excellent weeders ... but only if they don't eat the main crop. Crops like cotton, corn, strawberries, fruit orchards. See this link
* Look at weeds as a great way to make more manure ... compost it. Even slashing the weeds and letting them fall where you cut it is a great way to mulch the soil - increase water retention and generate good climate for a living soil.
