Upgrade Farming

Hi Everyone,
My name is Dushyant Gorsi and I am 27 year old. Actually from Childhood I am quite interested in farming and as a farming background this is in my blood. After 10th standard I am studyng far from my home - I have done MBA in finance from Paris and currently working with MNC in India.
I have more than 100 bighas of land and interested to updrade the farming style which is continously adopting by my family and neighbourhoods. My land is in North of India (UP - Muzaffarnagar near Meerut) - I really want to continue the farming and interested to buy some more land but before that I am interested to upgrade my current land with things like proper water supply, electricity (with mordern technology), equipments, soil development so than I can decide what can I grow on this land with effective production and better profitability. After looking around a bit I am very much influenced with green house or growing medicines.
Would anyone please advise me how to start - to take the things step by step because currently I am working but soon I will be able to give 2-3days in a week to my farms. I would really appreciate your suggestions.

1. Contact nearest Department of Agriculture office for information inputs.
2. List down crops growing nearby your area.
3. Visit other leading farmland to gain ideas.
4. Growing crops/ medicinal plants under Green House is easy keeping marketing of produce in mind.

Development

Hi Dushyant,

Firstly, I do appreciate your interest about farming. I don’t think you need any basic information about farming because you have got some background already. I must say that; your move towards developing the farms is the right decision!

Since, you are working part-time for this project; it may require you one full-time assistant where he can update you on daily basis.

I am not trying to discourage you but, this field requires lots of efforts, hard work, patience, experience and one must ready to take the risks and challenge. To start with, you need to consult experts who can able to prepare detailed plan of basic requirements for developing your farms like e.g. water supply system, electric supply and soil testing and improvement techniques etc. Approach any nearest bank or NABARD, see if you can get any financial assistance and there are some subsidies for the developments of farms.

Regarding selecting the crops it is always better to consult your local Agricultural / Horticultural Board/ Krishi Kendra/ Kisan Advice Centre etc. These departments will suggest you the suitable crops based on the water availability and soil conditions of your farms and also they can advice you some crops which are grown by local farmers and their successful stories.

There are various kinds of crops been practised one of which are for, short to medium term investment like; spices, fruits, vegetables, dairy, poultry, fishery culture and floriculture etc. For long-term investment plantations like teak wood, sandal wood, rubber, rose wood etc. This has to be decided by you based on your investment plans.

The medical plants are grown in India for centuries and recently becoming popular world wide as it was ascertained that there are no side effects whatsoever. There is a potential demand of these medical plants in the global market; the best way is contract farming. Regarding green house there are mixed reaction from the various farmers in India, I believe this requires proper training and maintenance for the successful crop. Apparently, there are subsidies offer for the greenhouses, check this at your nearby Horticultural Board for more details.

It is always advisable to do comprehensive study before finalising the crops from variety of seeds to potential marketing.

I would say; split the whole farm in different areas for different crops. The mixed crop is always better for many reasons which you will need advice again on this.

The requirement of agricultural equipments will be based on as and when it is necessary. Most of these equipments are expensive to own and however, there are some subsidy available for this as well.
