Consider following points before considering commercial fish farming under rainfed conditions either seasonal or perennial .
WATER QUALITY -
Dissolve Oxygen :
Optimum level of oxygen should be 5 mg/l for fish productions .
Temperature : Optimum temperature ranges from 14-18 degrees Celsius in cold water and 24- 30 degree Celsius in warm water. Optimum temperature ranges from 14-18 degrees Celsius in cold water and 24- 30 degree Celsius in warm water.
Turbidity : The measurement of turbidity is a key test of water quality. Optimum visibility of turbidity ranges from 40-60cm.
Ammonia : Ammonia is toxic to fish. On ionized ammonia- 0.02-0.05 mg/ l is a safe concentration for fish.
Nitrite : Balance of Nitrite level :
Hydrogen sulphide : Thick layer of organic deposit at the bottom. It is toxic to fish. It creates stress to fish.
pH : pH is a concentration of the hydrogen ion concentration in water
<4-Acid death point
4-6-Slow growth
6-9-Best for growth
9-11 - Slow growth
>11 - Alkaline death point
Hardness : Mainly calcium and magnesium constitutes hardness of water. 60 mg/l helps in pond productivity .
Free Co2 : Nill to < 12 ppm
Soil Texture : Soil texture should not be too sandy nor too clayey
Traditional fish farming : Traditional can be done in all types of water bodies and water is used by people for cleaning , bathing , irrigation purpose etc. production is low. The culture depends upon the utilizing the naturally available food .
Intensive Fish Farming : Perennial water body is taken into consideration. This water is not used for any people uses like cleaning, bathing and irrigation purpose .
Polyculture : Composite fish culture can be done to produce fry, fingerlings and table size fish.
Integrated Fish Culture : Fish cum duck farm / Fish cum, Horticulture / Fish cum vegetable etc.
Cage Culture : Cage culture is an aquaculture production system where fish are held in floating net pens.
