retiring into farm

Your question is very generic.
Lot of parameters which matter:

1. How much income are you expecting post retirement? 5L/10L/15L+?

2. The charm of rural life is there but are you ready to live there forever? The life is not easy in farms. There is little infrastructure. Electricity supply is erratic, probably no internet. Is your family ready to move (if any)? Your kids education will certainly not be as good as it is in cities. There is a reason why people are migrating to cities from rural areas.

3. 4 acre piece looks like bit small unless you go for cash crop or green house or dairy (which require BIG investments 50L minimum) to generate good returns.

4. Will also depend on how good the land is ? Irrigated or not etc.

These are my thoughts. Personally, I am into high tech job earning well and planning to enter it slowly/partially to cause minimum disruption as well as may be eventually escape the stress of corporate life.

Hope that helps.

Send me PM if you wish to share ideas.
Cheers.

my reply juxtaposed

1. How much income are you expecting post retirement? 5L/10L/15L+?

Mathew - 5L/year sufficient

2. The charm of rural life is there but are you ready to live there forever? The life is not easy in farms. There is little infrastructure. Electricity supply is erratic, probably no internet. Mathew : Comfort level of family may need to adjusted. but beleive that the pleasure gain from locality, peacefulness, river, domestic animals, local activities will certainly entertain them than life in 4 walls of world in city. yes better schooling available within 10-15 km travel ling and tran facilities also available.

3. 4 acre piece looks like bit small unless you go for cash crop or green house or dairy (which require BIG investments 50L minimum) to generate good returns.

Mathew: yes I think too.. but hope a diary farming of 10-15 HF can be possible + rubber planation in the said land..

4. Will also depend on how good the land is ? Irrigated or not etc.

Mathew : Yes well irrigated and road touch land. and we have sufficient rains too. and the place is rural kerala.. apx 18km from distric head quarter....

thanks lot for your valuable advise and inputs in decision making.

4 L /year is possible from 4 acres over a period of time. What you need is creativity and direction rather than anything else. You can earn more based on what you do.

My suggestion is ensure minimum fix income of Rs 30,000 PM ( By Way of interest on FD OR RENT etc) which I feel should be enough to meet monthly expenses of small family.Once this income is assured -you can jump into agri projects & enjoy the returns -both iternal & financial.Financial returns are subect to dedication & hardwork. Iternal pleasure is for sure.

Best luck

I am also planning on similar lines, but have a long way to go. My view is that there are only positives of such move and no negatives.

Few points being:

- Secure monthly income, like what one of the above post suggested so that you dont have the sword of survival hanging each month
- Plan the approach clearly - rubber (not so sure but my expertise is limited), but points around how do you want your farming to be laid out. Cash crops what age, horticulture like mango, coconuts etc., poultry & meat related like hens, goats, cows etc. The latter require lot of investment and dedicated care and are dependancy on lot of uncontrollables unlike vegetation.
- All this will require decent sized land and excellent irrigation and local markets nearby. Land size should be targetted atleast 10 acres and transportation is the cost driver and having mandis, markets nearby is a great plus
- You are ahead of the game as you have a respectable 4 acre land - research in the nearby areas and get more info on fertilizers, local weather nuances, farm help, equipments, market conditions for sale etc.
- Secure you land by fencing, irrigating and building water conservation facilities.
- Demand for agri products like land can never diminish - as long as humans live we need to eat and hence we need to buy

summarise

Friends

thanks lot for sharing your experience and ideas. those 4 acre land holding already have rubber plantation and only 1 acre which has mix of mahagani, nut meg, banana...and have in that some plain portion. so I do not think it is wise to cut rubber plantation which is just 5 yrs life of tapping for mix cultivation. my land is in Kerala, so we group of friends -total 3 plan as

start diary farm in each one of our own land in kerala with intregrated goat , hen....etc

buy some plain/barren red soil land aprx 20 acere in Tamilandu aprx 150km from our home town and start farming there. so in that way we can balance our agri passion as well as home front too

regarding income yes ofcource we can generate some income of for survival without doing any new venture too.

so just a push and some motivation lacks i think, rest we can surely go ahead

I am in the same group. Have 4.5 acres and want to move in full time..

I feel 25-30K per month is achievable if you have some cash crop.

But not really sure if we need to get 30K from other sources to get into farming. If you have 30K guaranteed income then what else you need?

If you are serious about farming then I feel it would work out. I am not saying it's easy but workable.

I am setting a timeline on the personal side to move in full time.

4+ acres is little less as you can't have too many options(dairy,Cashcrop all together) but doable.
