Congratulations Buddy.......Wishing you all the very Best. Choose a path carefully, get some USP for your crops and don't be a "Me Too" fella and you will do great.

all d best

hello sir, im from karnataka, i welcome you to the stress-free, tension-free, pollution-free culture ,, i.e. our agriculture.
you have done a nice job and its a good decision too.

But i request you that, please dont expect more money from agriculture as soon as enter it. but god gives you more than what you expect.

And also please dont do what these scientists suggest.. bcoz they are making both farmers n consumers fools, patients. they are spoiling our culture n also polluting our mother earth...

please refer subhash palekar's books.

Anyway ALL THE BEST SIR......

hi
i am not a professional agriculturist but i have started a floriculture unit at kodaikanal in tamilnadu and have been running it for the past 3 years. i have also done a lot of study, regarding green house cultivation vs open cultivation. before i elaborate let me tell you agriculture is not easy game. REMEMBER THE GRASS IS GREENER ON THE OTHER SIDE.

NOW before you proceed, i would advise you to remember the following:

1. are u going to do traditional agriculture?
2. or are you going for hi tech cultivation/
3. alternatively i understand from your post that the lands have been fallow for quite some years now. so you can consider organic cultivation also.
the market for these products are growing and also fetches a higher rate in the market though at present there are limited outlets for sale of these products.

once you have decided against all these the next step is:

what is the type of soil in your area?
what is quantity/quality of water available in your land..
what are the traditional crops being grown in your area.
what is the temperature pattern and the annual rainfall in your area?
with these data in your hand i suggest you can formulate a pattern of agriculture which can yeild you a good income.

third point is : how are you going to distribute your 80 acres of land:
my suggestion to you would be to plant 1/3 are with short term crops of say 90 days tenure (vegetables?)

1/3 are with medium term crops may be one year two year tenure crops. and
the remaining 1/3 with long term crops say 3 to 6 year crops like pawlonia trees or stevia or any other crop which gets you high returns.

i would also suggest you visit some farmers who have sucess stories with them. one such farmer i visited in dharmapuri in tamilnadu grows brinjals in the open on hi tech pattern and harvests 4 tonnes brinjals in one acre. there are many more really sucessful ones.

also remember for any crop you have to decide on an annual average price and not depend on one crop and changing it for the next season. alternatively you should have enough marketing acumen or knowledge so you can bring out the crops when they are sold at high prices. but that will be possible only if you have a salubrious climate all round the year. even then the vagaries of nature does not allow you such liberties. i have studied the rain fall average for the last 80 years in kodaikanal and can make out a distinct change in patterns in recent years. though the annual rainfall is (captmdilip at gmail com) almost every year equal to the average rainfall for the area, it does not rain when it should and rains when it should not....this pattern has been clearly established.

remember 80 acres is a lot of land, and a lot of revenue can be generated, with good planning and execution.
i wish you all the best
regards

Good decision

Hello
We took the same decision last year and immigrated from Mumbai to our farm and new home near Mysore, Karnataka.
As everyone has pointed out, keep patience and dont expect much, spend as much time as possible learning new stuff.
Also, read and research as much as possible. If you want your venture to be profitable, then following is essential
1. Dont completely trust the village folk, most of them are still doing what their ancestors have been doing.
2. Follow some practices by TNAU (Tamil Nadu Agriculture Univ.), search Precision Farming on the net and you will get good information. They have proven techniques.
3. Solve the labour problem first, thats the only thing that can put your life to standstill.
4. Dont start agri on the whole area, take up say 5 acres as trial and grow as many varieties as you want to get a hang of stuff.
5. Go for a small (5-10) cow dairy, it would be great for the manure. And milk will be by product.

Its tough in the beginning, but dont lose heart and we hope you make it thru to becoming a successful farmer. You can contact in case you need any more guidance.

wel come and wishing all the best.

hi,
good decision. I am an engineer i also did the similar thing. Purchased a land
last year and started developing. which is under development stage.
Due to unwanted rain my crops were failed to same extent this year.
up to now it is non irrigation land. i have in process to bring water to my field transformer and boring etc. Development will certainly take time it needs some hard work.at initial stage. You have to concert experienced farmers as well. you need good man power. anyway wishing you a good luck.
