Need to assess the soil

Dear All,
Can anybody help me out to get information on soil assessment. I am planning to by farming land for irrigation. I want to send the soil to some lab to understand what all plants/crops can be cultivated there..

I don't know which state you belong to. In Tamilnadu, there a good number of govt and private parties who do soil testing.
