Dear gentlemen,
Anybody having any Idea about Natural Camphor manufacture / Camphor tree cultivation? what is the status in India?
Camphor tree (Cinnamomum camphora): Natural camphor is extracted by distilling the leaves and bark of Cinnamomum camphora, a native to China, Taiwan, southern parts of Japan, Korea, and Vietnam, it is also synthetically produced. Camphor oil is extracted by steam from the chipped wood, root stumps and branches of the camphor tree. It is then rectified under vacuum and filter pressed.
Cinnamomum camphora would grow in Indian climatic conditions, it need not yield camphor at commercially viable levels.
A new tree species, named as Cinnamomum agasthyamalayanum, which is endemic to the Ghats region of Kerala, was named as after the type locality, Agasthyamala hills, was reported in 2015 by scientists of Kerala Forest Research Institute. Its leaf and bark lets out strong camphor smell when crushed. Whether camphor can be viably extracted/distilled from this plant's leaf and bark is yet to be established.
