Jatropha cultivation Report
Project @ a Glance
• Jatropha curcus is a drought-resistant perennial, growing well in marginal/poor soil. It is easy to establish, grows relatively quickly and lives, producing seeds for 50 years.
• It is found to be growing in many parts of the country, rugged in nature and can survive with minimum inputs and easy to propagate.
• This highly drought-resistant species is adapted to arid and semi-arid conditions. The current distribution shows that introduction has been
most successful in the drier regions of the tropics with annual rainfall of 300-1000 mm.
• It occurs mainly at lower altitudes (0-500 m) in areas with average an-nual temperatures well above 20°C but can grow at higher altitudes and tolerates slight frost. It grows on well-drained soils with good aeration and is well adapted to marginal soils with low nutrient content.
• It is a small tree or shrub with smooth gray bark, which exudes a whitish colored, watery, latex when cut. Normally, it grows between three and five meters in height, but can attain a height of up to eight or ten meters under favourable conditions.
• It has large green to pale-green leaves, alternate to sub-opposite, three-to five-lobed with a spiral phyllotaxis.
• The petiole length ranges between 6-23 mm. The inflorescence is formed in the leaf axil. Flowers are formed terminally, individually, with
female flowers usually slightly larger and occurs in the hot seasons.
• Jatropha makes a delightful red-flowered accent in a shrub border planted to attract attention to an area. It flowers nearly year round and so is quite popular as
a patio tree or garden accent.
• The trees are deciduous, shedding the leaves in the dry season. Flowering occurs during the wet season and two flowering peaks are often seen. In permanently humid regions, flowering occurs throughout the year. The seeds mature about three months after flowering.
• Jatropha seedcakes, produced as a by-product of pressing the oil, make an excellent organic fertilizer or protein-rich livestock feed. Another by-product is glycerine.
• Other parts of the plant are also useful: dark blue dye and wax can be produced from the bark, the stem can be used as a poor quality wood, and the roots help in making yellow dye.
• The flowers of Jatropha Curcas and the Jatropha stem have well-known medicinal properties, and the leaves can be used for dressing wounds. All these things can be used, or sold.
• Alternate uses of the oil include climatic protection, varnishes, illuminants, soap, organic insecticide, and medicine for skin diseases, cancer, piles, snakebite, paralysis, dropsy and many more.
• The latex of Jatropha curcas contains an alkaloid known as "jatrophine" which is believed to have anti-cancer properties. It has also wound-healing properties of curcain.
• Jatropha the wonder plant produces seeds with an oil content of 37%. The oil can be combusted as fuel without being refined. It burns with clear smoke-free flame, tested successfully as fuel for simple diesel engine. The by-products are press cake a good organic fertilizer, oil
contains also insecticide.
• Kalam said: 'With limited research so far in the bio-diesel sector in the country, India aims to produce 6 million tonnes (MT) annually of bio-diesel by 2010 and 60 MT by 2030.' He said the government and private sector majors should accelerate research in bio-fuel sector as well as the related aspects of production, marketing and processing.
• The Tamilnadu Government along with the Forest Department have planned a project for cultivation of Jatropha in 150,000 hectares in Tamilnadu. Any farmer with land can make their lands available for the Jatropha project and the seedlings as well as technical assistance for grow-out will be provided by the Forest Department.
• The Indian Railway is to raise Jatropha along the railway track and plan to plant Jatropha along 25,000 route kilometers on two sides of the track. They plan to replace 10% of their total petro-diesel consumption by Jatropha. The project has been started on a pilot scale.
• A Tamilnadu firm is working on a project to grow 600,000 hectares of Jatropha on lands owned by farmers in various parts of Tamilnadu. They will provide farmers with the seedlings and Rs. 3,000 per hectare for land preparation and planting. They will contract with farmers to
buy out their entire production of Jatropha seeds.
• The Maharashtra agro-forestry Department has been actively encouraging the raising of Jatropha in watershed development projects.
• By the year 2011 a planned 20% of the total diesel consumption is to come from Jatropha biodiesel, with biodiesel production planned to reach around 13 million tonnes annually by 2013.
• One of the most widely advertised aspects of Jatropha biodiesel production seems to be the potential employment opportunities it might generate.
• Average yields quoted in their projection are 1.5 kg per plant per year, oil recovery from the seeds is expected to be 91%, and the oil cake and glycerol are to be sold to compensate for the cost of processing the seeds into biodiesel.
