I was working in the IT sector and recently left it to pursue farming and its related activities. I am currently in the process of identifying farmland in Tamilnadu.

I would like to get to know people interested in a similar move or has (near/far)future plans for something similar. You can send me a personal message or post in this thread and I will pm you my contact info.

I am not looking for any business proposals or investors. I want to meet like minded people and see if we can do something together.

IT to Farming

Dear Friends

Good thought of shifting from good sophisticated IT sector to farming. I have been hearing on the forum and from many of my friends regarding this transformation, but most of the time it happens or in fact I have noticed that 90% of people end up in buying land and giving it on lease, 5% buy the land and in one years time, they give up and either go back to IT by selling their land or giving it on lease because of either family pressure, ground level realities and problems faced in the field like finding labor, crop failures, marketing of product/produce or due to health problems ( change in lifestyle ). The remaining 5% survive, but its almost takes 2-3 years time to get the income equivalent to the earning in IT sector.

IT (Farming) is tougher than IT, so please see to it that you do enough research before venturing into it. Get in touch with KVK, Vets, Agri Research to understand what best can be done in the farm. Don't depend upon friends relatives & well wishers. Deal with experts, and take decisions. Always start with small units and then expand when you gain experience. Don't apply IT fundas (Switching Companies for Salary Hikes and Promotions) in Farming. Farming is not a Day trading activity, its a long term investment. Apply the Project management skills gained in IT sector.

One more thing I wanted to share, why most of the people venturing into farming think only of producing, I mean taking land and either produce crop or do dairy farming. Why not we think of improving the Supply chain for the produce, whether it is vegetables, grains or meat. Almost 20% to 30% quantity and quality loss occurs for all the produce till it reaches end user, and in this process nor the farmer is earning for his produce nor the end user is getting good quality produce for money he is spending. Think of Food Processing units and Supply chain Management, huge opportunity exits.

Thanks Friends, Just a thought which I wanted to share.

Pravin,

Thanks for your comments. In my personal case, I am under no illusion that farming is going to rain gold. I am primarily looking for self sustenance. Only then I intend to look into other profit making ventures in farming.

Excellent analysis by pravin. However,I'm aware of these hassles and going ahead.

Regarding food processing, it is a big area to define anything here. Please visit CFTRI website and also in person. There are enormous amount of FP technology built. That wil be starting point for your FP search.
Good Luck..

Like to share some experience :)

1. Started farming around 2.5 years with 4.5 acres
2. First year went in getting the fencing done and building a small room so that we have some place to sit.
3. We started off with Banana as it was suiting my weekend effort compared to other crops.
4. We started off with only 1000 Banana.
5. This year could implement most of my plans as things are slowly coming to shape.
6. Even locals now understand that I am serious and not just showing off.
7. Currently I am in Australia but local people around the farm are helping me moving things!!
8. So definitely better coordination than IT :)
9. Things would be slow but not impossible,
10. Sincere request please don't give it for lease. your land would be spoiled and you won;t get any fun/satisfaction out of it.

About Praveen's comments.
1. Most of the people compare the income with IT income. But frankly they won;t get that :)
2. Supply chain and other options are little tough as they take more time and investment as most of the areas are under money lender's control.

It's better to start with farming..chose whatever crop/pattern best suits your available time(if you are not 100%). But start. Only then you realise the challenges.

Goodluck!!
