Hi All,

With the Mango yield going very low this year, I felt its worth doing integrated farming in my 10 year old 10 acre mango farm to reduce the risk of depending on only one crop.
Few options that I have in mind with livestock are like Raising birds Giri Raja, goats.
I would be great if some can point me with other practical options to use the farm & de-risk from these situations.

Thanks,
Seshu

goats/sheep should be more appropriate in comparision with chicks, since they are less labour intensive, and also have a good market any day.

Where is your farm located.

Thanks,
Antony

Thanks Antony for the suggestion.
My farm is located near Hampi (Bellary,Karnataka)

Do you think the local variety chicken Giri raja is labour intensive ?

Thanks,

Dear friend,

Once the mango trees are fully grown the chances of doing anything else is difficult.Having planted mango you should concentrate on ensuring higher fruit production which is possible with scientific management. Try some locally available qualified consultant.

Hi Seshu,

Yes Chicken farming is definetly more labour intensive than goat/sheep farming, and on doing sheep/goat farming you can increase the revenue as the fodder can grown as intercroping.

Let me know you if you require consultancy in goat/sheep farming, as we do end to end goat and sheep farming consultancy.

Send me a private msg if interested to know the economics of the same.

Thanks,
Antony

its not always possible to get a great yield in Mangos

In our region this year none of the mango farms have a yield of more than 20% of the normal yield.Looks like this is something to do with climate/nature problem & nothing to do with qualified consultant.

What inspired me to start this thread was after seeing sadanand's revolutionary way of 'integrated' farming which earned him 20 lakhs from 2 acres farm.

The Hindu : Karnataka / Bangalore News : This farmer earns Rs. 22 lakh a year from 2.1 acres of land

I appreciate any more inputs for my farm.

Thanks,
Seshu

Integrated farming

Which Sadanand are you talking about? Can you send me some info? I would like to read up.

Some thoughts about integrated farming:
* Bee keeping. Will help your mangoes, and also earn you some extra cash.
* Try growing ginger under the mangoes.
* Goat/Sheep as someone suggested is also a very good idea. But be careful that they don't damage the plants.
* Chicken are good in the sense they don't damage trees and take care of some pests. But it will be profitable only if you have a good local market for these.

Thanks shreesh for the valuable info.

Regarding sadanand. He is award winning farmer from Bangalore whose achievements were covered in The Hindu.
I am unable to post the link as I am not a premium member.

Just google for "The Hindu : Karnataka / Bangalore News : This farmer earns Rs. 22 lakh a year from 2.1 acres of land" you will get the link.

Thanks,

Hi Seshu,

Very inspiring news in hindu...

As fellow member suggested, it is very difficult to grow inter crops in mango after 10 years period. but it is a good idea to raise chicks, goat/sheep.

I dont know why many farmers are inclined to shift agricultural lands to mango orchards. May be because of cost of production of field crops and labour scarcity.

Any way thank you for sharing news in HINDHU.
All the best.
