pest management

Dear Naren,

u are seeing some suggestions coming , u can get many more, if u start comparing u can come out with some commonalities. If u want to proceed based on ideas like this invite about 15 to 20 ideas and come to some conclusion which suits you.None of these people will give a proven rationale which would work for all times because these techniques although may work for some time are not tested and scientific explanation given.
Now if you are investing on papaya crop on large scale, you should ask these people to offer financial guarantee of crop safety to a great extent simply suggesting is easy.

hence study the plant pathology in depth then apply these techniques, lest losses from viral diseases is definite, other fungal diseases may also trouble to some extent.

organic systems are good but it needs greater knowledge than using chemicals for control

Dear All,

Thank you for all the suggestions..I have been growing papaya in small scale in the last 3 yrs..I have tried it up to 100 Plants..I have not seen any pests attacking this small number of plants so far. May be the climate and the low availability of papaya plants was the reason behind this. From all the suggestions received so far,I have decided to do the following for the large scale production.

1. I have already planted forest plants like teak, Neem, hebbevu, Gooseberry etc.they are all three old now.. They are planted in rows with 15 feet between the two rows. I will plant the Papayas in rows between those forest plants.

2. Maintaining 10 ft distance between the two papaya plants in a row.. I have heard that heavy density of plants increases the chances of the spreading of diseases faster.

3. Plant mustards in between two plants ( I have not tested it so far. but no harm in trying to see if it helps)

4. I have planted Glyrecedia plants all along the fence in my farm. Will plant few of them in a row after every 6-8 rows of papaya..

5. Will depend on natural pesticides like spraying mixture of garlic, green chilli, asafoetida every month..
