Hi,

I have 1 acre land + One Helper Family (1 Male, 1 female) + Water Source in our land (Outer Bangalore).
This land has come from parents and I am 11th down batsman as far as farming is concerned. Need some input here...

1) I will be spending 1.2L on the Salary of the Helper family. How can i use this land (with some extra investment) to have some meaningful ROI.
2) Can experts suggest some low maintainence plants/tree/crop (eg: Silver Oak etc...) that can be thought of...
3) Any Website/Contacts which can help me to take this forward will be helpful.

Welcome to farming....

If you are spending 1.2 L yearly, you need some ROI. I suggest Vegetable Crops to start with as you already have 2 farm hands ready. If needed, you can get more people for work from outside.
This initiative should cover your expenses and also you will get some extra money.

Thanks sir....

Few other things

1) Neighbouring plot has silver oak, Guava, papaya and pomegranate. Do I need to do the soil testing? How it can be done

2) My biggest fear is "taken for a ride" because of my farming ability (dis). I am planning to have a training to understand various aspects of farming. What do you suggest?

3) I am working professional and intend to work for 10 more years till I am able to earn meaningful income from agriculture. I will spare Saturday / Sunday to this effort as now. Is this meaningful?

4) If I put right resources ( money/man/mix (crop)/method) what is the average income 1 acre land can give.

5) What are the regular pitfalls associated with farming

[Padmanabhan Ganesan] - You can do soil testing and identify what crops can grow.
2) My biggest fear is "taken for a ride" because of my farming ability (dis). I am planning to have a training to understand various aspects of farming. What do you suggest?
[Padmanabhan Ganesan] - KVKs provide training. This should be good enough. If you want to follow certain models, you can attend their training (like Bhaskar Save Model, Subhash Palekar Model, Subhash Sharma's Model and many more. Check my blog for 2 models already available)
Use Organic or Natural Farming so that your expenses are minimized. Please take opinion from your farm hands but you should be the deciding authority in your farm.
3) I am working professional and intend to work for 10 more years till I am able to earn meaningful income from agriculture. I will spare Saturday / Sunday to this effort as now. Is this meaningful?
[Padmanabhan Ganesan] - With one acre, if you do traditional methods of farming, utmost you can get 1 Lakh (Max) Or if you want to adopt Green House type of farming, you may get more money but you have to put in more money for the initial setup. I will not comment much on GH further.
4) If I put right resources ( money/man/mix (crop)/method) what is the average income 1 acre land can give.
[Padmanabhan Ganesan] - See my answer above.
5) What are the regular pitfalls associated with farming[Padmanabhan Ganesan] - Too many factors like weather, water, labour, market prices etc. Still you can make a decent money.

My comments inline..
