Stall-fed Goat Farming-Details
VIJAY FARMS

About us
Vijay Farms is located in Villupuram district in Tamilnadu, India. We are located 150 kms from Chennai, 60 kms from Pondicherry and 25 kms from Villupuram town.
We are engaged in breeding and research on Boer goats for the past 5 years. Our mission is to produce high quality, fast growing, genetically superior Boer breeding stock and supply to the up and coming goat farms.
My father ran a large dairy farm and I grew up learning livestock management. Though I am a physiotherapist by education, I have always had a passion for farming and I strongly believe that I can make a big difference in goat farming in India. I am currently running Vijay Farms in an innovative and very profitable manner.
Why Goat Farming
Indian economy is growing at a great speed and the demand for food is increasing exponentially. Goat meat that used to be a luxury for most of the population is becoming affordable to a larger number of people due to economic growth. This has caused an increased in demand for mutton in India and not enough supply to meet the demand. This demand cannot be met by traditional method of small scale backyard goat rearing in villages.
As the demand far exceeds supply, goat meat prices have been increasing steadily. This increased price has created a need and opportunity for a large scale organized and scientific method of goat rearing in controlled conditions (Stall-Fed method). Improvement in the quality of the breeds is a critical factor for commercial success.
All the above factors have created a tremendous opportunity for entrepreneurs to take a lead and be pioneers in goat breeding business. There is huge potential for commercial success for those that follow advanced farming methods.
Stall-Fed Method
If anyone plans to do a Goat farm project in a controlled and professional manner, Stall-fed method is the most practical and best method to follow.

In this method
• Goats are not allowed to graze in the outside. They are kept in a Shed (Ground level or Elevated Slotted level) separately depending upon the sex,Breed,Age,and Weight.
• Bucks (male goats) and Does (female goats) are kept in Separate rooms and allowed to mate at desired time with desired Bucks.
• Quantity and Quality of Feed can be differentiated according to the Stage and Nutritional Requirement of different age groups of goats.
• Wastage of energy during grazing is avoided.
• Disease transmission is prevented from outside animals and outside plants.

About Boer Goats

Stall-fed method is highly intensive and there is a need for parent stock that,
• Respond to the increased nutrition
• Have high feed conversion ratio
• Twins and triples kidding character
• Adaptability to stall fed conditions
• Higher milk yield for the kids
• Higher weight gain, etc.
Boer goat is known for its fast weight gain, and quality meat worldwide. It is a native breed of South Africa and it’s developed and reared all over the world for Meat purpose. In India its Reared in limited numbers and it’s mainly used to cross breed with local breeds to yield excellent Cross-breeds.
For a comparison if we see the Weight achieved by different breeds in India in 1 year Age were,
Local country breed : 15-18 kgs
Malabari : 25 to 30 Kgs
North Indian Breeds
Like Sirohi, Jamunapari : 25 to 35 kgs
Boer (South Africa) : 45 to 50 kgs(In Indian conditions)

Cross breeding Boer with Malabari Goats:
Though Boer breed is the best Fast growing breed in the world,In India Its available only in limited numbers. Female Boer goats are very rarely available for Sale. So, cross breeding is the best option For Devoloping Boer breed in India.
In this method One male pure Boer Goat is needed to cross with 50 Malabari female goats. In terms of weight gain and meat quality cross breeds performance is 80% of pure breed.
Malabari Goats are best suited breed for this purpose,as it is having very good characters such as
• Twins kidding character
• High milk yield for healthy kid growth
• Available at affordable cost
• Better weight gain
• Disease resistance and temperature tolerance.
