How to start a Dairy Farm

Hello,

I am a Marine Engineer. It is my dream to start a small Diary Farm. I am new to this field and all i have is the theoretical knowledge.

Can you please guide me how to start a Dairy farm, how much land needed to start a farm of 20 cows? What all ground works to be done before entering this field?

Hi Joseph,

Initially please get a training at NDRI. You will get to know most of the practical aspects of dairy farming. Then try to visit 2 or 3 farms before you invest yourself. Start with 5-6 cows and then slowly expand. Then check the technical feasibility of the project , economic feasability and distance from market, demand for milk in that area, any other dairy farms surrounding.

These are the basic things you need to consider.

What is the procedure for applying animal husbandry course over there? What is the fee amount? course details?

Any government support/scheme for starting AH?

Dear Sir,

Every state has demonstration farms, Vetinary Universities Breeding centres etc and there is no need to go to NDRI. Most states have more than one.

If you can not give reasonable and practical replies, Aswani can refrain from advising.
