Cow will give good quality of milk only when it is feed the right fodder. A well-designed feeding program which is in compliance with nature is a must. Pearl millet (bajra), sorgum (jowar), soyabean husk, coconut and jaggery should be given on routine basis. It is the base feed fulfilling the carbohydrate requirements. It further needs to be supplemented with other nutrients as per the season. Vegetables mainly carrot and beetroot can be added in the feed from February to May. Subsequently post May, as summer is in its peak it is ideal to give sugarcane to cows as a supplement to control the internal heat of its body. It continues till August. It is then followed by maize from beginning of September month till November end and finally feed the cattle with groundnut husk. In addition it is recommended to put rock salt piece before cows occasionally so that it licks as much as required depending on its body need. Powdered salt must be strictly avoided.
Cows fed on wheat and rice bran lack the nutrition in its bodies hence its’ milk is also less nutritious. Brewery waste is a complete no as it is chemically treated and leads to adverse affects on health of cows. To increase the fat content in the milk give fresh maize along with the corn because the corn has all the vital nutrients. After removing the corn, the left behind residue is only roughage which cannot fulfill the nutrient requirement of the cow and the fat content will not be increased. So give the corn too along with the stalk and leaves of the maize plant. Quality of milk will be good only when cows eat good food! Prepare the concentrate within the farm. In the concentrated add oiled cotton seed cake because the de-oiled cake will again be roughage and would not add any nutritional value to the cows. And if possible switch to desi cows if you want high fat content in the milk because Indian desi cows' milk has fat content more than 4% for sure.
