I am small farmer in District Ropar in Punjab and presently involved in growing Poplar trees ... but, I am exploring the possibility of diversifying on a small scale into green house farming. I have read, it's quite paying, but would like to know about it in detail ...scope, investment, marketing and economics etc

Hi there,

If you are thinking of green house then you may want to study hydroponics. It doesnot cost more than normal green house cultivation. For example 1 acre og Capsicum cultivation will cost you around 45 lakh which includes capital investment plus 1st years operating expenses. You will be able to get at least 100 -140 tons of color Capsicum. Even at an average price of Rs. 40 per kg, you will have net sales of 40 lakh to 56 lakh per annum.

Importantly you do not have to worry about crop rotation and continue to grow Capsicum in same green house for as long as you wish. You will need less labor, less water and less pesticide.

You are also entitled for subsidy from NHB (25%) plus State subsidy which may be equal to or more than what NHB gives.

So there is no way you will loose in this scenario.

Hi there,

There is no off the shelf system that is sold in India and for that matter I do not favour any such systems. I rather consider the system that uses local materials. At the end of the day every crop has specific needs and one must take those in consideration while designing the system.

Have you seen my project video on you tube? search for Strawberry in polyhouse. You will see my project video on growing Strawberries.

We make our own hydroponic nutrient and use it for our plants. We are now commissioning a color pepper project which is followed by melon project all using hydroponics. Strawberry will be cultivated in next season.

NHB susbsidy is available upto 50 lakh or 25% of the project cost which ever is lower. Few state give additional subsidy so do check with your local office.

Strawberry is already grown in Punjab what is important is that with hydroponics you will be able to grow them when others in your area can't and of course quality and taste of your produce will be far superior than others.
