Can any diary farm owners in this forum could share their experience on real ecenomis of diary farm. There may be well documented theories, researchers and highly skilled/qualified 5 star consultantes advising high yeild. However really wish to know that in realty, and in normal a village circumstance where modern diary technologies and practices adopted but still localized, how much income can be generated. for a fiesibility study lets consider 10 HF cows.. what is the yeild of cross HF in normal south indian ie Tamilanadu or Kerala enviorment and farm practices...

Reason to put this thread, as there are several friends like me wish to quit corporate jobs/IT jobs anticipating that that time of income we could generate in corporate world could be generated with peace of mind from diary farm. Is it worth wile to try.... and sufficient to generate a reasonable income for a nuclear middle class family ???

awaiting briks and feed backs....

simple doubt but difficult to explain .....

hi mathews,

Dairy farming is not only based on the investments, knowledge, milk yielding or technologies.....probably in Agricultrure or farming sector...live stock enterpreunership is a more interreleated complicated activities....what we learnt on our personal experiences. Here, no one can guaranty you or athenticate (irrespective of theories,reaserch,skillness..etc.,) you the earning as well as profitability like in other bussiness earnings. Here it may not possible to discuss or mention all, however we can try to satisfy your quiries...

1) At present, you can consider average best HF's milk yield in south india is 08-10 ltrs. only.(on individual milking cow basis).

2) In today's scenario, may be livestock bussiness alone cant be bread earning activity/solution as a alterative to any other earning jobs.

3)Again, to adopt modern technology, our nation is not forwarded to provide such options to adopt in small farms like...10 to 100 herds size and also it is not possible to recover the investment from output of such farms.

we too are trying hard to make it commercially viable but not finding any light......

other members, are also requested to write in this forum transparently.

thanks and regards,

Dairy Farming ; Indian Context calculations :perceptions of new Entrants

To be very realistic this subject of Dairy farming is not for email/postings being a 3 dimensional subject. More importantly any/all Agriculture related businesses cannot be discussed on postings. At the same time info on NET is just not available for a simple reason that most of the people in Agriculture in INDIA are not knowing English & very miniscule quantity of people therein use computers to UPLOAD any information.

As such most of the entrepreneurs are into OR heading for LOSSES due to many reasons ; mainly due to perceptions of new entrants which can be tabulated as….

1. All the information is available on “Maharishi Google” . : Unfortunately there is hardly any page on Indian dairy farming on Google. This is because more than 99.99% of the Dairy farmers DO NOT use Computers & don’t feel any need to UPLOAD any information on NET.

2. If a farmer who is illiterate can do Dairy farming why can’t an educated one do the same : All of us need to realize that Farming is not done on Computers but on Fields & is neither virtual nor simulated. One cannot visualize the size of an animal by just looking at a Picture.

3. There is no need to take any training/study about Dairy farming: We can never learn to drive a car by reading a book or by sitting next to Driver even though everyone is well averse to basics of Driving. It is equally important to Learn about a business which will cost/ fetch us Millions both in investment as well as Turnover / profits.
“ Can anyone become an MBA by reading the book 10 Day MBA which is available on Footpath for just Rs. 200/- ( Indian pirated edition) ? ”

4. Dairy Business is similar to running any other business. : We are dealing with Live animals & with TOO many variables which have to be duly taken care of viz. Feeding, Breeding, Housing & Management etc. If these are not upto the mark then Milk Productivity is REDUCED considerably. Thus it is very imperative that these factors have to be necessarily learned in detailed systematic way ( not by just reading ) and avoid loss making mistakes.

5. Automization/use of Machinery will optimize the Productivity. : Machines are meant for our convenience & have no bearing on improving the Productivity of animals. Animal productivity is related to (Balanced) Feeding which is the most the important issue & is a daily recurring cost which accounts for more than 85% costs. This COST keeps on changing everyday; linked directly with Inflation. The other costs viz. Management viz. Labour & Administration cost is just around 5- 8 % & treatment is less than 2% of the total Farming costs.

6. Throwing posting & discussions on various agri related sites will give
information. : This has to be really seen to be believed. Majority of the people advising are from Dairy Processing (specialized in conversion of milk into Milk Products) & NOT Dairy Farming which deals with Milk Production )

7. Housing, Climate & Purchasing of good quality animals will ensure a smooth running of the Farm: Crossbred animals are present all across India wherein the temperature ranges from 22- 48 so climatic variation need be ruled out. Purchasing a good animal is not sufficient but proper feeding to ensure optimum production is very vital. Cost of housing, machinery & animals is ONLY ONCE & depreciable.

It would be ideal to discuss the subject in person or on phone.

However it is surprising to see that people who want to invest in Lacs/Crores will not spend any money to CALL ( as it costs ) but will try to gather info FREE by posting onto NET ?????

Please feel free to call anytime & will explain in details....

Dairy Farming

I had no Practical experience in Dairy Farming. But,I had come across with farmers in Dairy by virtue of my Job in the Bank and in addition I am also an
Veterinarian.

01.Commitment.Many of the farmers who are taking up Dairy Farming, are taking them as subsistence farming, leaving the Management to some relatives or workers.Hence pl explore whether u can spare your full time to Dairying.I feel your involvement will pave way for good farming, particularly in Dairy.
02.You are telling that you are shifting from other Jobs like It etc,Pl do not expect good or very good returns in the beginning itself. It requires your adaptability to new style of living.Coming out of Jobs in AC rooms and working with Live stock with ill equipped infrastructure like power cuts would not give you magical results. But the Problems can be addresses, when one is committed.
3.For success of Dairy farm, try to i) source the well bread stock ii) Manage them well iii)Be patient and try to grow slowly, but not swiftly.

All the Best. With regards for your Successful Mini Dairy.
