Hello,

I am planning to start Dairy farm in Alwar Rajasthan. Initially i am starting the farm with 15 Murrah Buffalo.

I have following questions.

1. How Much Milk Does a Murrah Buffalo Give. (I have explored a lot and see lot of variations some give 12 Ltr some give 14 Ltr in 01st lactation).

2. How much Qty of feed is given to Buffalo, pls advise Lactation wise.

3. How much of Water does a Murrah Buffalo Drink.

4. How Much Feeding cost come per day per buffalo.

Need advise from person who is already into Dairy Business having Murrah Buffalo only

Thanks!

Hello

1. heifers should weigh at least 500 kg at the time of calving in order to reach a maximum milk yield. Lactation and milk yield depend on both genetic and non-genetic factors. The yield varies from 12 -16 lts per day.
2. In Early lactation :-1. Concentrate (15% DCP, 70% TDN, 2500Kcal/kg) 2 kg for maintainance & growth, plus 1 kg per 2.5 kg of milk produced. For e.g. for a 10 kg milk producing buffalo the concentrate to be fed should be 2+4 i.e 6 kg daily.
2. Green fodder :- adlib i.e. as much as the buffalo can eat.
3. Dry fodder - between 6 - 8 kgs depending on the body weight of buffalo.
4. Provide 40gms soda bi carb, 50 gms mineral mixture, 33 gms liv 52 powder and 150 gms of bye pass fat separately if it is already not part of concentrate formulation.

During Dry Period ( if not pregnent):- Green fodder adlib. Dry fodder 7-10 kgs.

During Dry Period ( in mid pregnency):- Green fodder adlib. Dry fodder 7-10 kgs. Concentrate 2 kgs.

For Down calvers/ Advanced pregnency :- concentrate 4 kgs, Green fodder adlib. Dry fodder 5-6 kgs.

Concentrate may be reduced in all stages by 40 - 60% if good quality silege is available.

Concentrate mixture should have 30% grain (maize, oat, barley etc), 30 -35% oilcake (groundnut, soya DOC, cottonseed, linseed, mustard etc), and rest bye products ( Deoiled rice bran, wheat bran, gram chuni etc).

3.Generally, buffaloes require more water than cattle under the same circumstances and should have access to clean cool water and libitum. A restricted water intake leads to a decrease in dry matter intake and thus affects milk production and growth negatively.

Salinity of water is seldom a problem in dairy buffalo feeding. A salt content of up to 5 g/liter of water can be used for buffaloes. However, temporary diarrhea may be caused by water approaching the higher levels.
The qty depends on weather.
4.cost of feed concentrate /day/5 kg - Rs.900 per quintal
You can contact theLocal Animal Husbandry Department staffs/Veterinary College/agriculture university etc. for the purpose.

Hello Anshul,

Why have you selected Murrah for commercial farming? don't you think good breed cow can produce more milk and more profitability?

I am also in dilemma for Murrah vs Any good cow.

can you let us all know the resion you selected Murrah?

Thanks,
Vikas

Hi Vikas,

There is a lot of difference in Dairy Farm with Cow Herd and Buffalo Herd, We get milk in large volume (18-25 LTR a Day) from HF Cow but the fat content is only 3% thus it cannot fetch you a good price for Milk whereas a Buffalo milk gives 6-8% of Fat though feeding cost of both Cow and Buffalo is same.
