Mr. Sunil Kumar, Proprietor Sree Guruvayoorappan Dairy Farm and Vaikundam Farm Resorts says,

I don’t believe in corporate houses that spend 100 times the actual expense only to keep their luxuries at the expense of common man of India. NGOS could play a good level knowledge to be used for the development of the country and not for few. The country should totally grow. How can the PM of India say India is developing when majority of the Indians are crying for a square meal and the economic bosses sigh out after having a Taj meal. Let Goddess of India decide the punishment to them or the people of INDIA.

Dr. Usha Barwale Zehr, Chief Technology officer, MAHYCO-Maharashtra Hybrid Seeds Company says

There is a need to ensure that our farmers are educated more on what opportunities they have and what can be done. In this regard, partnerships are essential as companies cannot do it alone.

I understand that most of the companies have agriculture interests and working with farmers. I do not have specifics of what are their programs.

Mr. Hanumantha Rao, Ganga Kaveri Seeds Pvt. Ltd says-

Given the percentage of the population still dependent on agriculture and the relatively small holding corporate agriculture does not seem the way forward. The farmer needs advice on the best crop practices, which he will take from a government agency and not a private agency. There are any number of collaborative efforts between NGOs and corporate. The challenge is in scaling up these efforts. The e-choupal initiative of ITC was touted to be the biggest game changer in agriculture in recent times. However even this initiative is limited to just 3 states and just 3 crops at that.

Absolutely, yes. The one that quickly comes to my mind is Tata Tea Plantations in Assam, with whom CIFA had a successful consultancy project on fish culture. Many more are on the anvil.

Mr. Milind Bhandarkar, Founder, ALFA TECH INDIA (P) LTD says-

Actually today’s generation does not want to enter in agriculture, and it is a fact that a farmer when he grows agriculture products, they will not be sold and vice versa. So there should be fixed price for each & every commodity as in this case money always go to middle man and farmer and common man always suffer. The corporate & NGO should take care & should give proper justice to farmer & all.

Yes, this is a must. Though, some corporate are contributing in some fields, but their focus theme is livelihood. So some time they are contributing in farm production and some time in allied agriculture business. TERI (Tata Environment Research Institute); WIPRO; Ford Foundation; SRTT; Himmothan, Dorabji Tata Trust, and Barclays Bank are some such corporate houses which help farmers.

Dr. Manish Patel, Executive Director, Incotec says-

So far as NGOs are on their right track and fare enough in playing their role, there is no harm in shaking hands with them. Extension activity (Lab to land) is very much needed in Indian agriculture as of now and for that such synergetic relationship with NGO will surely give good mileage to corporates as well to NGOs.

Yes, I knew many of them from seed sector as well from pesticide sector who really runs their special mission to help farmers in term of knowledge development as well to improve their skill. Some of them are Excel, UPL, Dhanuka from Pesticide sector and Mahyco, Bejo Sheetal, Namdhari , Nuziveedu from seed sector.

Dr. N. Barathi, Director, Growmore Biotech says-

Yes, I do agree with you that corporate houses should come forward and choose their NGOs to promote agriculture. I would go one step more in recommending corporate companies to go directly to the farmers and not to create another NGO as a middle man. If I see the sugarcane cultivation model in Tamil Nadu, it appeals me for their approach in having their field officers who directly approaches the farmer for technical assistant and harvest who are employed by the sugar factory management. The increase in productivity of the sugarcane, transfer of knowledge to the farmer from the research institutions and availability of agri loan at the same interest rate are the results of the direct approach to the farmers by the sugar factory - no middle man and the factory price reaches to the farmer directly. We have such examples in India. Our corporates should copy this model for other crops and create huge job opportunity for agri graduates.

If it happens, the corporate houses will only get benefit of the farmers work. So creating awareness among each farmer by the government will be better to the farmers.

Yes, that is needed, but the corporates must not have the tendency piggyback on NGOs to establish the chain and then bypass them.

I know of Pepsi Foods in Punjab, growing Basmati Rice they are also working with farmers for citrus juices, for Tropicana.

Mr. S.M. Karuppanchetty, Chief Operating Officer, Agri-Business Incubation (ABI) program says-

Definitely, since the corporate have the scale and strength that NGOs in the ground level don’t have but the latter is better attuned to the demands at the grass roots level and thus more effective in implementing operations.

We are in the process of getting corporates on board, following the Government’s initiative to have CSR mandatory spending up to 2%. We are thus looking to have corporates lend their CSR support to incubators be it in terms of funds and manpower and infrastructure resources. This will be another effective platform for PPP mode of operations in the sector.

Almost all the major agro-companies are out there helping the farmers; for example, ITC’s e-choupal, DCM Shriram’s Kisan Haryali etc.

Yes, I strongly believe and recommend this but it should become corporate start dictating terms to farmers. It should be win-win situation for both. NGOs need to come forward in a big way which I don't see as of now happening.

I know ITC is doing some good work in North India- e-choupal. In South we have Akshaya Kalpa in Karnataka - helping in setting up dairy farms - organic milk.

Mr. Vasant Rao, Director, HPL Global Services Pvt Ltd says-

What we can do is provide training to the farmers on the export requirements and help them to market their produce directly. This is already being done. However, some corporate houses continue to exploit the farmer. What needs to be done is to educate the farmer on the Government policies, activities of various Government Departments and modern farming technology. Farming is a very lucrative profession if modern technology is adopted.

ITC has e-choupal. Ballarpur Industries, Reliance Retail readily come to mind. However, there are a large number of other corporates who are working with farmers in various parts of the country and providing them with various inputs and buy back the produce.

Mr. Biswaranjan Mohanty Says-

Yes. Now Corporate need to share a percentages of their profit in Social works like building school, hospital, rural sector etc which is still at its nascent stage and need a real initiatives by corporate. They called it Corporate Social Responsibility(CSR).

Similarly it is high time for Govt.to raise a bill so that Corporates should help the agriculture sector with active participation with NGO and other organisation. In addition to that there should be a mandatory posting of Doctors and other professionals to be posted in rural sector for few years. Initiatives of Govt. should be mixing the corporate with agriculture sector regularly and continuous basis, so that the barrier between the two sectors minimises and agricultural sector can be benefitted from it.
As an agrarian country, we must give priority to agriculture sector not in words but in action also.
[14:36:55] Shweta VMG: ITC, HUL, Tata,Dabur, Infosys foundation etc.
ITC-e-Choupal
ITC e-Choupal is an innovative market-led business model designed to enhance the competitiveness of Indian agriculture. e-Choupal leverages the power of Information and Digital Technology and the internet to empower small and marginal farmers with a host of services related to know how, best practices, timely and relevant weather information, transparent discovery of prices and much more. e-Choupals not only connect farmers with markets but also allow for a virtual integration of the supply chain and create significant efficiencies in the traditional system.
A business concept embedded with social goals, e-Choupal was designed to empower farmers and triggers a virtuous cycle of higher productivity, higher incomes, enlarged capacity for farmer risk management, and thereby larger investments to enable higher quality and productivity.
These interventions have helped transform village communities into vibrant economic organisations, by enhancing incomes and co-creating markets. ITC’s e-Choupals serve 40,000 villages and 4 million farmers, making it the world’s largest rural digital infrastructure created by a private enterprise.

HUL- Project Shakthi

The objectives of project Shakthi are to create income - generating capabilities for underprivileged rural women by providing a small-scale enterprise opportunity, and to improve rural living standards through health and hygiene awareness. It is ushering in prosperity and more importantly, self-respect to women in rural India.
Under the project, HUL offers a range of mass-market products to the Self Help Groups (SHG s) which are relevant to rural customers. HUL imparts the necessary training to these groups on the basis of enterprise management which the women need to manage their enterprises. For the SHG women, this translates into a much-needed, sustainable income contributing towards better living and prosperity. Armed with micro-credit women from SHG’s become direct-to-home distributors in rural markets.
A typical Shakthi entrepreneur conducts a steady business which gives her an income in excess of Rs.1000/- per month on a sustainable basis. As most of these women live below the poverty line and hail from small villages with less than 2000 population, this earning is very significant. Project Shakthi thus enables these families to live with dignity, with real freedom from want. In addition to money there is a marked change in the woman’s status within the household, with a much greater say in decision making. This will lead to better health and hygiene, education of their children especially the girl child and an overall betterment in living standards.
The important and notable aspect of this model is it creates a win-win partnership between HUL and the consumers, some of whom will depend on the organization for their livelihood and builds a sustainable cycle of growth for all.

Tata BP Solar
Tata BP Solar is playing a key role in helping bridge the urban-rural energy divide .Tata BP Solar products have transformed lives in the villages of many states of India.. The idea is to make the sun shine on rural India, to brighten its future.
Dabur-Sundesh
Sustainable Development Society (SUNDESH) is sworn to the mission of ensuring overall socio-economic development of the rural & urban poor on a sustainable basis, through different participatory and need-based initiatives. It aims to reach out to the weaker and more vulnerable sections -- such as women and children, illiterate and unemployed – of the society.

Rural Development- Infosys foundation
The well-being of people living in rural areas ensures sustainable development. The Infosys Foundation works with local administration to achieve community development goals. They construct roads, provide drainage systems and electricity, and rehabilitate flood-affected victims in rural areas.

Mr. Kunal Soni, Director, Greenfield Agro Forestry Products says -

An NGO is usually a non-governmental organization (NGO) which is any non-profit or a voluntary citizens' group. Logically a corporate house or organization always seeks profits for their investments and efforts, compared to that NGO searches fund raiser or back up for their good cause with less or no profits. Until and less a Corporate is planning to improve their brand image it is a bit tricky for them to come forward. But I really appreciate if corporate houses come up and join for a moral cause because unlike government and UN a corporate is very strict about their efforts and investments, and they also keep a tight check on logical functioning and working of NGO’s initiatives. This increases efficiency of NGO with good funding, as sometimes government funding criteria is outdated compared to present market rates of equipment, tools and services required by NGO.

Mr. Anil Patil, Chief Consultant says -

Corporate houses, even FDI are welcome as they bring in technology and funds together. However there is a lurking fear that common farmer will be displaced from his farm ownership. Hence government should permit corporates and FDI but have a good control with several restrictions. NGOs do a different job they are not profit making organizations hence can be of supportive role only

There are many companies say a few hundred in number. They are generally agro based companies who manufacture and export agro products like gherkins, seeds, baby corn, silver skin onion, baby corn, mango pulp, oil seeds/oil crops like palm oil etc., they generally supply seed and fertilizers, In animal husbandry sector the poultry breeders supply one day old chick and feed and buy back grown broiler or eggs produced. This is now well organized sector and Banks fund these companies for onward lending to farmers.
