Hi

COIR FIBRE
Unit Demo & Project Report

Coir Trade
The global Coir Trade's annual production of coir fiber is about 350,000 metric tons, while World's top two producers India and Sri Lanka together account for about 90%. Indian coir industry is an important cottage industry contributing significantly to the economy of the major coconut growing States like Kerala, Tamilnadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Goa, Orissa, Assam, Andaman & Nicobar, Lakshadweed, Pondicherry, etc., amounting an exports around Rs. 70 crores.

Though India accounts for more than two-thirds of the world production of coir and coir products, the fact remains that India has long costal area growing coconut palms. Coir industry development other than Kerala is insignificant.

Coconut husk is the basic raw material for coir products and only 50 per cent of the husk is used, the remaining being used as fuel in rural areas. Hence, there is vast scope for the growth of coir industry. This renewable resource is underutilized, as the local coir mills process only a fraction of the available husks, which accrue year round as a waste during coconut processing.

Spread of coir pith as a peat moss substitute in horticulture has further pushed up global production and prices.

Ample scope is there to develop geo-fibre, fire retardant, cement and gypsum polymer development, acquiring of new technology like PVC-tufted coir products. Emphasis would be laid on Modernisation and Mechanisation in a phased manner without affecting employment to make Indian coir products competitive in the export market, by providing incentives for installation of modern equipments.

The Cd would be of great help to you in understanding more about the great developing scope industry.
