Hi Friends,

I came across news about training monkeys to pluck coconuts in Thailand and other countries.
I have attached a video clip showing training school in Thailand to train monkeys.

YouTube - The School for Monkeys - Thailand

I am just thinking this option in India. Have any one tried this in India.
Anyone in India able to make it possible?.
Every year Kerala Govt (Kerala Dept. of Industries) is awarding 1 MINR for new inventors for developing machines used for coconut plucking. They can also consider this option.

My opinion on training Monkey for coconut plucking:

1.Training Monkey for this purpose is quite natural and no harm to Environment
2.Trained monkey can be very useful like any other animal. For example Service Dogs are trained to guide blinds and is approved in many countries like Australia - discriminating service dog is illegal in Australia, i.e. the service dogs can freely go into bus/train/streets or anywhere in public places like human.
3.Cost wise this option cheaper than human or machines
4.Monkey can pluck more coconuts than man/man operated machine(i.e. output is more - average 900 - 1200 coconuts per day by single monkey as per information available on net)
5.There is no insurance or proper protection available for the person involved in coconut plucking in India. This become a dangerous job and not very attractive within young community. Using monkey can over come all above issues.

Idea's:

- A trainer from Thailand can be arranged to train monkey in India. Getting monkey from Thailand would be an issue with Blue cross and medical problems.

- Someone should check with local blue cross for this purpose
- Someone should check legal issues if any

Who knows the idea of introducing monkey can bring job/business for many individuals who can start training schools like in Thailand.

Illegal

Great idea indeed!

However, I did some quick check on the net and it appears using monkeys for anything is illegal under the Wildlife Protection Act.

If anyone knows that it is legal, please let us know.

What I did not like is the fact that in India, all tamed monkeys have their teeth removed, for the handler's safety reason. That surely is cruelty to the animal.

Yes Shreesh, as you said, someone should check the legal aspect of this.

In this modern age, finding new machinery is a solution for any problem.
At the same time man should also develop the skills to use the natural resources effectively. Like any other animal, monkey can also be useful if trained properly.
