Break-Through in Jasmine Flower Storage

Jasmine flower is plucked early in the morning in the field and is sent to the markets in the bud stage. Jasmine bud opens out as the day progresses and loses its sale value. It has been a challenge to keep the flowers in the bud stage till late in the evening.

Thermchem Fresh packs took up the task of extending the shelf life of jasmine in bud shape. The buds were put in a special bag with an imported breathable membrane and the bag was stored in a refrigerator. The buds remained unopened for almost 36 hours and the flowers also had the crisp feel. The trader Mr.Velu with whose support this experiment was carried out confirmed that the previous day’s flower stored compared very well with the fresh arrivals.

The flowers stored for this exercise were sourced from the Koyambedu market at 11 A.M. The storage life of the flower would be much longer if the flowers are put in the bag immediately after plucking. The traders are quite upbeat about this success. Thermchem now proposes to take this technology to the farm level so that the grower can space his shipment for the entire day rather than doing distress early morning sale. The cost of the bag right now is to be made affordable. The Company proposes to approach the Govt to subsidise the farmers for use of bags.

The technology behind the storage is to reduce the respiration of the produce by
1. Reducing the temperature during storage
2. Reduce oxygen and carbon-di-oxide in the bags with semi permeable membranes
3. Reduce ethylene using absorbers.

Similar experiments have been conducted for other products. The results are as under:
1. Chrysanthemum - 15 days
2. Mary Gold - 15 days
3. Ooty Carrots - 25 days so far. Experiment is continuing
4. Custard Apple - 7 days
5. Coriander/Mint - 7 days
6. Raddish - 14 days
7. Lemon - 20 days
8. Lime - 15 days
