I was reading on mastitis prevelence in India and it seems that sub-clinical mastitis runs rampant in Indian unorganized dairy sector. My question is do the farmers and cattle owners, even understand the diseases? The economic implications, detection etc etc? I have strong feeling that since the traditional breeds are very resitant to mastitis, the farmers don't even know or understand mastits.

I would like to have your views on this.

thanks

Hi

Now most of the farmers are aware of this disease, but few need training and education.

I was talking to a vet affiliated to BAIF. His view was that farmers stop treatment before the completing the full treatment cost. This make me think that most probably the farmers don't understand that even sub-clinical mastitis can cause considerable milk production loss.

This raises a question that how strict are Indian dairies in the quality checks? If there is clear financal incentive for the farmer to take care of his cows maybe the incidences will go down. I have read some reports which say that in hybrid cows subclinical mastitis is over 20% and may actually be hovering aroud 30-35%.

HI

Yes very true. YOur views are absolutely right, thats the reason the farmers require some quality education on these aspects. MAybe a training can be held once in a month to educate farmers .
