My farm land is in Virudhunagar district, this is close to 11 Acres. We already have barbed fence (done last year). 5 Feet from the fence have planted palm trees for the whole are in a distance of 5 feet. This was done last year, 90% of seeds has germinated but it will not act as a wind barrier for at-least next 5-7 years.

Please let me know if it's a good idea to plant Karonda between the fence and palm trees, how much time it will take to grow to a reasonable shape for wind protection? Please also let me know if we need to water this or if we plan before rainy season (4 months) will it survive on it own?

Some experts suggested Kiluvai but thought Karonda could produce lot of fruits to attract birds and could be useful for commercial purpose. Please suggest

Dear Sri SankaraCs,

Karonda after full growth prevents trespassing of animals , even wild boars because of spines but wind break plan is different which is called as shelter belt for any farm or orchard to be planted to protect from gales/cyclones, hot winds and cold winds etc.

Wind break plants: The wind breaks are provided to resist the velocity of wind which causes loss of bloom, wind erosion and evaporation of moisture and to keep the orchard warm by checking frost and cold waves. The beneficial effect of wind break is felt up to a distance equal to 3 times its height.

The characteristics of a tree suitable as wind break are:
It should be fast growing
It should be easily establishable
It should be able to acclimatize to the environment
Should have dense canopy
It should not harbour pests and diseases
It should be frost resistant
It should be drought resistant
It can be propagated by various methods
Planting material should be easily available and cheap
It should have multipurpose uses like fuel wood, fodder etc.
It should with stand periodical pruning.

Some plants usually employed for growing as wind break plants are: Casuarina (Most effective in open sandy soils), Pterocarpus santalimus (Redsanders), Erythrina indica (Requires pruning to make tree top bushy),Cassia‘s and Polyalthia longifolia (Slow growing) are some trees which can also be used. For mango orchards, seedling mangoes and polyembryionic mangoes may be planted as wind breaks to provide chance seedlings and root stocks. There should a spacing of 12m between the row of wind break and the first orchard row. This space may be occupied by roads and drains. The wind break trees should be planted closer than their spread so as to form a thick screen. A spacing of 5m is maximum for most plants

Thank you dear Garao56. I will go with Karonda for live fencing, seen your past threads for choosing this plant. This is for wind and security, sometime local villagers also comes in for picking some vegetables and fruits.
1. Please let me know the spacing you suggest from the barbed wire fence to Karonda plant
2. Distance between each Karonda plant
3. Water requirement for Karonda plant (is it required to water this regularly for planning drip or to plan this before the rainy season)
4. How many years it will take to establish dense fencing? Karonda growth!
5. Do you know any suppliers in Tamilnadu (red variety)

Karonda :
A thorny bushy shrub which is used as an effective protective hedge. Apart from this, the plant produces delightful fruits in summer which are cherished all over India. Seedlings are sown 60-75 cm apart in single rows. Stem cuttings also root easily in monsoon.
It grows to a height of 6-8 feet if allowed , bushy type pruning will be done in the main field ( 200 plants per acre), Starts yielding after 3 years. In the main filed each tree will yield 25 Kgs of fruits (Each Kg can be sold at Rs.50/- (Retail price. Main crop will fetch Rs. 100000/- as net income.

Cactus is better option since karonda is hardly any obstacle. Karonda is tender plant and hardly an obstacle. It can easily be tresspassed by wild animals including wild boar, neelgai, village stray cattle etc.Cactus blocks entire passage where not even a rat can go through..Cactus creates micro environments in the field and stops strong winds also.It can support creepers once it grows big.
