Can I get the details about agarwood farming?
We provide complete consultancy for Agarwood cultivation, maintenance, fungus inoculation and marketing products, processing and value addition activities.
Agarwood is not a single species plant.
There are five genera that produce valuable Agar wood through fungus infection. Now this is the costliest wood and oil in the world-costlier than sandalwood and sandalwood oil.
Two primary genera (after properly affected by fungus) are harvested sold in markets for use as wood, perfume, sculpture, religious purposes, and for oil/resin extraction for pharmaceutical and high value perfume production.
Genera: Aquilaria & Gyrinops
Aquilaria genera consists of 25 species (Some of the species-A.agallocha, A.maleccenses, A.microcarpa etc are found to grow in India). Best suited for almost all climates of India is A.maleccenses-this is the one we also promote)
Gyrinops genera consists of 7 species (This is not found/may not grow in India, as this is mainly in Cambodia)
Species in Aquilaria genera are the one found and grow in India. Fungus infection will not happen naturally in India, except North East region where it takes more than 15 years to happen. The new technology is fungus inoculation after 5-6 years (after the tree reaches minimum girth thickness of 15-20 inches) and it will take 1-2 years to be affected completely by fungus.
The tree require only early care up to 3 years and it is relatively strong and will grow fast in almost all types of soil and climate (0-4000 M altitude), except in marshy land. This can be used as a shade tree in coffee plantation as it develops thick foliage and gives good shade.
