this is srinivas could please tel the information about the food for the 10 jersey cows. r u using any type of milk machines for milking purpose, what is the cost for the milk machine and where i need to contact for these milk machines. and i forgot ask u where your from that means where is your dairy farm located please let me know.

Dairy Farming
Hi all, just signed in. I am delighted about the valuable information shared by members on dairy farming. I intend to do farm, starting with about 30 heifers in Central Kenya. I have 3acreas and have leased an extra 8acreas grow fodder.
I would wish to learn what challanges to expect in such a senerio from those who have walked this road in the before.
I am also welcome any advice on how to pack and process milk products.

Your plan for successful dairy mainly depends on concentrated feed and dry feed - that too it is to be cultivated in your farm. Else, your cost of production is more and finally you will not be getting the optimum results. Unless you have powdered maize, hedge lucerne, azolla etc your feed will not bring give the cow sufficient energy and potential to give milk. This will affect your future and you cannot bring back the cow to its normal stage. Therefore, have a complete and a total plan of feed then the cows. OK Many buy cows and are in great trouble.

Totally agree with your point. Some doesnt think about cultivating own fodder while setting up the dairy farm

i have been running a Dairy farm for almost one year now and started out as a fresher. i have gained lot of knowledge as we have the best centre in India at Karnal known as NDRI - National Dairy research institute. i get lots of information from scientist and thanx to them that i am happy with the returns.
just to give a head start to all and thinks to take care are as follows :
- good source of green fodder or even better Silage usage is encouraged.
- balanced nutritional diet - TMR preferred.
- monitoring breeding cycle and keeping a close eye on 13 month calving interval
- good wheat straw storage place
- good vet and trust worthy
- a nitrogen cylinder for siemen storage - if you can get this, its the best things to do.
- feed management for better returns
- good water storage for clean drinking water at all times.
- good mineral mixture and other additives for the cows health.
