Sandal/Teak or any fruit Plantation?

Hello all,

I have 7 acres of Land near to Hyderabad ( Warangal District) Its red soil. Current water resource is WELL which can server 1/2 acre if cultivated paddy in summer. Other seasons, it can server 1.5 to 2 acres if cultivated paddy.

My plan is to go with 5 acres of plantation. Many suggested Sandal/Teak. At the same time many said, if you go with Sandal/teak, you can't use that 5 acre for at-least 15 years! I am confused. Can anyone please suggest me ? I am not counting at the huge money at the end of the Sandal/Teak yield as many people are saying!

Present plans are :

1. 4 acres of Sandal/Teak - 1000 Sandal and 500 Teak. 1 Acre of mixed fruit
2. 4 Acres of Mango mixed, 1000 Teak plants in the borders.
3. 2 acres mango, 2 lemon , Teak+Sandal in the borders

Which is good ? and why ?

Also, I want to know about Dripp and how-much subsidy I can get for 4 acres.

My land is 95KM from Hyderabad city.

Dear sohankrishi,

Are you expecting regular income (something like paddy)? If so, forget about the Teakwood / Sandalwood plantation as they will deliver returns only after 10-13 years as mentioned by the other people in the community. If not, it is an option.

Always diversify. Its worth it. I would suggest your Option 3. The reason is very simple. You have diversified here a little bit. Sometimes mangoes fail in one year but at least you have a backup option from lemon. I am assuming you are expecting income from the land. Otherwise go for Option 1 or 2.

Do you know Teakwood / Sandalwood requires more water? You have mentioned Well Water as the source. If that being the source, how will be able to have mangoes / lemon / teakwood / sandalwood. How are you going to augument your water sources? Even if you go for Drip Irrigation, you will need water either from the current well or you have to dig borewell or you need to get water from the nearby rivers, streams, ponds etc. Please consider these.

I would prefer having 1.5 - 2 acres for paddy and the rest 3-4 acres is divided into mangoes(1 acre), lemon(1 acre), other fruit bearing trees(2 acres) and 1 acre for vegetable garden, vermicompost etc as well as the Teakwood / Sandalwood at the borders (Please be careful about theft especially in the case of Teakwood / Sandalwood)

Please think through before deep diving.

sandalwood/teak cultivation?

Hi Krishi,

You have raised good question about cultivation in your five acres land.i think Mr padmanaba ganesan's suggestion will very applicable to you .i think Mr padmanaba ganesan analised your problems and given the opt suggestions.

1.two acres paddy cultivation :

From the two acres you will get maximum yield 40 gunny bags (60kgs) so total yield will be 80 bags of paddy from two acres.Now present market rate is Rs 650-700 per bag.So total amont of the paddy yield be Rs 56000/- Now we will think about the expenditure .I have enquired so many farmers with practical experiences .they have stated about the expenditure was Rs 50000 for two acres (subject to the water availiablity.If the water source depends on pons or rainharvest the expenditure will be more)

2.The mango cultivation is also good one .But last few years the mango farmers faced so many hurdles like application of pesticide and hormons for flowering .In olden days these drawbacks were not occured.But now the eratic climate and global warming are spoiled the mango cultivation.The theft of the mango garden is a normal one in rajapalayam.

3.Teak & sandalwood cultivation is best one because less labourer will be required compartively vegetable cultivation.i think Mer padmaganesan will provide the labours to krishi.Lemon cultivation is also good one.But it will take 4 years for yield and yield stablisation will starts in th sixth year.Upto six years krishi will borrow friom Padma ganesh? Teak plantations is good but you will select the seedlings /saplings .Thats vital role in agriculture 7 horticulture .Now a days some type advance technology like cloning,softwood grafting,hibreed seeds &Tissue culture These are for what ? for fast growing ,early maturity ,uniform growth & quality timber.Tissue culture teak tree will attain the girth of 41 inches on completion of 12 th year .So the farmer will get some assured income like Rs 10000/-per tree.sandalwood have no hitech propagation method .only seed germination.In that case we have to see the parent tree for seed collection.If so seeling propagation the sandalwood tree will gives minimum 15 to 20 kgs on completion of 13 to 15 years.Now present market rate is rs 5000/-per kilo somebody quotes Rs 60 lakhs per ton.

Among those who have replied,some are selling sandalwood and teak seedlings/saplings and they will give emphasis on sandalwood and teak cultivation.If anyone waits for many years,he/she can expect good income but there are other hazards like theft and permission from forest departments.
Teak can be planted on borders,but not sandalwood.Along with sandalwood,pigeon pea (Cajanus cajan) can be cultivated as intercrop.
Seedlings of Teak and Sandalwood can be obtained from Govt nursery.
One can think of planting Sisu(Dalbergia sissoo).Forest dept can guide you about timber plants.
Many mango cultivers are available locally in Hyderabad.Agriculture and Horticulture universities can be contacted for Mango grafts.
I will suggest you these crops-various varieties of Jackfruit(one is all seasons) and the fruit fetches good price.You can go for big Guava ,Pomegranate,seedless Jamun,Sapota,Ber,West Indian Cherry(within one year you will get fruits),Soursop/laxmanphal(There is a good demand for leaves and fruits),exotic fruits like Abiu,Avocado,Dragon fruit,Fig,Kumquat etc.
