Dear Farmers,
I have recently taken over emu farming from my father. I haven't seen him making money so far. So help with your suggestions if it is productive to continue or to come out of it quickly.
I have more than 200 chicks and 100 breeders.

Thanks for all your suggestions in advance.

For the first time i am seeing a (-ve) feed back from a farmer. no body gives correct answers to your questions.

1. where to sell the emu meat, emu eggs and etc....
2. who is regulating/controling the rates of emu products.
3. Do we have processing units to extract the emu oil, emu meat, other stuff.
4. Do we have gov. regulated exporting system for emu to other countries.
no body does have perfect answer to this emu farming.

EMUs

Haryana EMU farms have answered you correctly.

Sell everything and GET OUT of the business as soon as possible.

This is all a fictitious business.

Only players are making money - Not the farmers.

First thing is emu industry is in a young stage to be develope, You wont expect compare to other animal rearing and their markets with this. But i can show you that how this buiss work and reach to highest in future.

all the four points given by you are related to Emu Slaughter House Project, which will take time to establish only if farmers will start emu rearing. so the prime need is establish emu farms to sell eggs and then hatchery for emu production, likewise when we reach in quantity of 5000 to 10000 birds to slaughter per year also we have to maintain emu production too. anyway thats the future look out after 10 - 15 yrs.

Now we talk about emu farms, i am telling you the exact price as i own a Emu hatchery in Aurangabad, Maharashtra.

One 3 months old Emu pair costs 14000 Rs, feed costs 10000 Rs per year approx, 1000 sq. ft. area needed to rear with 10 ft height fencing. so approx total estimate is 30000 Rs. per pair with all 1 year rearing cost to invest one time (1000 sq ft area cost is not added).

One pair lays 20 - 30 eggs per year and only hatchery owners will buy back eggs for 2000 Rs each egg ( here, you have to sell eggs from whom you brought the Emu chicks ). so minimum out of 20 eggs you will get 40000 Rs after 2 yrs and 40000+ Rs would be your income per year till next 25 - 30 years minimum.

Any queries, please feed back.

emu farming

So called emu industry in india is going through same stage as American Emu Industry was going in early 90s.
so it is my request to all big players and new entrants not to spoil this business before it take roots. Those who are in this business and have short term goals of making money are the real culprits and they should know that they are going to loose in a big way to spoil this unborn baby.
All emu farmers and big players should work together to make it an organised industry with the help of government. Because it is only the govt. who can make any industry sucessful, by its policies, financial assistance and providing well needed infrastructure which is urgency of emu industry too.

so don't panic just regulate production and focus on making end user market like meat consumption, oil production, and leather production by collective efforts and with the help of govt.

just focus on consistant money making instead of fast money making.

I have discussed the above questions in this blog in the previous entries. Let's look it again:

1. where to sell the emu meat, emu eggs and etc....

Obviously emu meat has to be sold to the consumer's like you and me in India. Currently there is no supply chain to carry emu meat to consumer's kitchen. The closely held market is in several Non-Veg Restaurants in Major Cities, which is offering Emu Meat based dishes and being received well. Unfortunately, we have only leg-bend emus for culling. No healthy herd just for culling purpose, because of sheer numbers.

Please read this blog entry for knowing more about discussing this issue.

Eggs have to be sold to Hatcheries. If you couldn't find one nearby, set up one. It doesn't cost much.

2. who is regulating/controlling the rates of emu products.

Market force, i.e, Demand and Supply will decide this rate. Once the adoption is high, and when the demand is exceeding supply, the rates for the birds will go up. This is very simple market calculation.

Regulating the rates for emu birds' is definitely not the Government's business. If that's the case, we won't be having general price rise across India in commodities.

In the near future, it will be the Slaughtering House Owner's will decide the rate for emu birds. Unless you have a integrated farming, i.e., you grow your own feed for emus, and buy only the essential medicines across the counter. This will save you a lot in feed costs. Other costs seems not having any variable portion at the most, i.e. quite static expenses.

3. Do we have processing units to extract the emu oil, emu meat, other stuff.

Emu processing units are coming up, in Andhra Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu. If my guess is correct, there will be 4 units in South India by end of 2011. These units are mainly focusing on slaughtering. Emu Oil processing requires special permissions, hence only few in the entire country will be able to do it, commercially. One of my friend in Tamil Nadu, already got this license from Central Government.

4. Do we have gov regulated exporting system for emu to other countries.

Govt does regulate hygiene aspects of this trade, as is happening to other meat product exports. Emu Meat is neither a rare item, nor a regulated/controlled item like deer meat. Hence, this question doesn't arise. In general, while exporting, it is the buyer's terms & conditions that rules.

are you sure that leg-bend emus can give you quality oil and leather?
well it will not !

I heard its established allready this year and they are taking above age of 18 and 40 - 45 kgs chicks, and costing is only 315 Rs per KG of only meat rate, and meat will be extracted of nearly 15 kg only. so whats remain to farmers pocket? likewise there would be emu birds lackness too, so the chicks rate will also rise ... think over it again ...

only rareness doesnt prove the export surety about the product, we must have to involve Gov to export it in future, Anyway the NABARD will do it for us whenever slaughter house owner will explain about the project to them.
