Dr. Tannishtha Bardhan is an Young Professional at G20 Agriculture Working Group, International Cooperation Division, Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare in New Delhi. She says, “The rapidly increasing global population and changing dietary patterns are driving up food demand. Stagnant crop productivity and declining natural resources due to intensive tillage based cultivation are directly or indirectly affecting the farming system’s production. In the post Green Revolution era, these challenges are further exacerbated by agriculture’s severe vulnerability to climate change. Extreme weather conditions like drought, floods, untimely rainfall are responsible for affecting crop yield, nutritional quality of crops and livestock productivity, which also becomes a contributing factor for global food loss and wastage. But this problem also works in reverse. The role of agriculture in worldwide context of climate change cannot be overlooked. Agriculture contributes to about 19-20 per cent of global Green House Gas (GHG) emissions, largely methane and nitrous oxides in the present scenario. The need of the hour is reducing GHG emissions from agriculture and addressing food loss and wastage to helping achieve climate goals and trim down stress on environment. The G20 platform also highlights the importance of promoting sustainable agriculture with a climate smart approach. Conservation Agriculture (CA), is one such promising eco-friendly farming practice which is effective in mitigating the adverse effects of climate change.”
