Dr. K. Prasad says, India is one of the highest producers of fruit and vegetable at the global level, but at the same time, it is well evident that postharvest losses of horticultural crops are at an alarming level i.e. up to 30-40 percent. Present need to reduce these losses emphasis the importance of an emerging field of horticulture known as postharvest technology. This science deals with all the aspects involved in loss reduction and quality retention of horticultural produce till it reaches the consumer. This discussion will focus on highlighting the importance, scope, research and job opportunities existing in this field, which will enable the young generation especially horticulturists who want to take up this branch as their career option.
