Microorganisms such as Bacteria, virus and fungi, actinomycetes are most often considered as parasitic microorganisms – agriculture enemies that result in waste. For a farmer, plant parasites could spell disaster – loss of food plants, spoilage and infectious diseases. And loss of valuable crop revenue and grief to the farmer.
But all microorganisms are not crop destroyers. Bacillus thuringiensis, Verticillium lecanii,Trichoderma sp. for example, are the microbial pathogens which are effective against insect pests and diseases for agricultural. Translated loosely, it means these microorganisms act as natural bio-control agents for pest species.
For that matter, all organic waste isn’t necessarily waste. Food scraps, for example, as compost, return valuable nutrients to the soil, and even help grow new food and it’s bacteria and fungi that do the decomposing.
All microorganisms may not cause waste – if used as biocontrol agents in agriculture, these very pathogens can help prevent waste. It is research that leads us to discover the many organic gifts that Nature has to offer.
