Dear sirs,
I harvested a bumper maize crop 3 acres 14 days ago and another crop from another 3 Acres about 6 DAYS ago immediately after which it was stored under plastic sheets open to sky.
It has been drizzling incessantly eversince and when the sheet was uncovered today the second harvest upper layer of corn cobs are infested with fungus like infection
I am sorely disappointed and am at my wits end as what to do.Can the infected corn be salvaged in anyway.I put in too much labour and costs to see it go waste.
What precautions need to be taken to save the other half under these adverse weather conditions as it is still drizziling.
Plz advise and guide me as to how the infected corn acn be put to good use.
Urgent help requested.
Thxs very much indeed.

Hi there,

Sorry about your post. Not much can be done now.

Unless you know what kind of fungal infection it is, it will be difficult to treat it. I suggest you do few things.
1) Get the fungus identified from a lab.
2) Take away infected cobs and store them separately.
3) Remaining good cobs, you need to move them to dry place if possible.
4) Once fungus is identified, use the chemicals to treat infected cobs, dry them out in sun and may think of using them as seeds for next season.
5) You certainly will not use the infected cobs for human / cattle consumption.

Hope it helps.

Hello,

Best option is to get buyer for the maize, who will pick up as soon as it is harvested, so you do not have to store them on farm.

Please quote your rates, by sending PM, so that I can try to arrange buyer, for your next harvested product and existing damaged product.
