As I (an Agronomist) understand, mutaion helps in creating varibility. And once u chieve this, selction process to have genotype (s) of your choice begins.Knowing right type (desired) genotype for a particular crop species is also very important and here lies your knowldge, experitise and experience.
Breeding is not always aimed at improving growth and yield. Today,breding is more difficult than it used to be,as the new problems are being faced in crop production and breeders have important role to play.
