Can anyone share details about Nutmeg(Jathi) cultivation
Nutmeg is an evergreen tree, which grows to a height Of 60 feet. The tree yields two spices - the dark coloured nut and the bright red mace that covers it. The tree originally from Indonesia, thrives in warm, humid conditions with abundant rainfall - 150 cm and more. It grows well on clay loam, sandy loam and red laterite soils, up to an altitude of 1300m above the sea level. The tree cannot withstand heat and needs the cover of shady trees. Water logged conditions also inhibit its growth, and so does wind. This makes it an ideal intercrop in coconut, clove, coffee or arecanut plantations.
Nutmeg trees start flowering in the six th year, and are thought to reach their peak yield in 20 years. The yield varies from tree to tree with the average yield being around 1500 nuts /tree/year and 1- 1.5kg dry mace/tree/year. But there are high yielding varieties that yield up to 10,000 nuts a year. The trees will continue to produce fruit until the 90th year or more.
Nutmeg and mace contain many chemical compounds that are known to have anti¬oxidant, disease-preventing, and health-promoting properties. The nut contains trirnyristin and many essential volatile oils. Nutmeg also has many therapeutic applications in many traditional medicines for its anti-fungal, anti-depressant, aphrodisiac, digestive, and carminative properties. spacing for seedlings 6-7m ,for grafting 5x5m the female nutmug tree starts fruiting from sixth year it takes up to 20 years for peak production of .fruits. for more details and planting material please contact ananyaagrotech@yahoo.co.in

I never seen the sixty feet height "Nutmeg"tree in Kerala and Tamilnadu.Normally the Nutmeg plants were propagated by silviculture i.e seed germinated method. But the germinated seedlings will be maximum 99% male plants? This is the major set back in Nutmeg cultivation. So the scientists of the Spices & Areca nut Board,Kozhicode
,Kerala developed so many varieties in Nutmeg for fast growth, early maturity and better yield. The Nutmeg will needs 70% shade with warm ,medium relative humidity. The fruit of the Nutmeg will in yellow colour, the kernel will be inside and it's automatically fell down on maturity. The kernel/Nut will covered by rich red coloured net flesh is called Jathi pathri. This can used for aroma in infdian kitchen with medicinal value.
The Nutmeg saplings are to be propagated by approach veneer grafting method .The propagators are to be used the female scion from selected female tree and the root stalk will be promoted by wild nutmeg seeds.Since the all Nutmeg sprouts are maximum male. Now a Days the propagation of Nutmeg saplings will be done by bio budding and step budding for fast growth and early maturity. Now many varieties promoted by Spices & Arecanut Board,Kozhicode like Viswashree,Vengula and CR by budding method. The initial yield will starts five to six years onwards. The stabilisation of the yield will be on completion of ten years and above. The life span of the Nutmeg tree will be seventy years and above.

dear Sirs,
I refer to your reply dtd 9th may 2014 inn reply to Mr sadasivan`s query on nutmeg cultivation.
I have a dffrnt question: On the onset of this year`s monsoon I planted 30 nutmeg plants .2' x2' pits with 2' depth were taken . Each pit was filled with 5 kg of organic manure and top soil 10 days before planting the plants. Plants were planted at the beginning of monsoon.
Now the monsoon nearing the end is there any need of a second manuring ?
If not needed now ,kindly advise whether next manuring is sufficient at the onset of next monsoon?
