Sir,
where these nursery plants are available. which type of soil is good for plantation. Government subsidies Available.
No Govt. subsidies for West Indian Mahagony ( Swietenia mahagoni ) plantation .
Identifying mahogany is a little harder than it might seem at first glance.
There are currently over a half dozen types of mahogany , but in agro forestry 3 species are planted -
Swietenia mahagoni ( Caribbean Mahogany, Cuban Mahogany, American Mahogany or West Indian Mahogany)
Swietenia humilis ( Pacific Coast Mahogany or Mexican Mahogany or Dwarf Mahogany )
Swietenia macrophylla ( Big-leaf Mahogany)
India and Burma were two places where the big-leaf Mahogany was successfully grown by British colonial era botanists.
In India, Mahogany was first planted in 1795 in Bengal and as far north as Saharanpur (UP).
The British wanted to propagate Mahogany all over India but one problem appears to be that the Mahogany tree refused to flower and produce seeds in the north.
The tree did well in West Bengal .
In West Bengal marginal farmers mostly plant Mahogany trees as an investment for their next generation as Mahogany takes 30 to 35 years to mature .
Growing sapling from Mahogany seed is the best way .
Mahogany fruit is called Sky fruit .
Germination rate from freshly harvested seed is 50-60 %
