Variability in Jatropha
I feel u are right. Ther is no variability, may be at molecular level also.I am not trained in P Breeding or Molecular Bio.but an agronomist. I feel that the only way would be mutation or hybridizarion with some related species if available,to create wide spectrum of variation to look desired traits.

genetic modification of jatropha curcas
Maybe this will put some light on your molecular marking quest.
I happen to read an article in my professional magazine, E & T, in the section Power biofuels, using sequencing the genomes of the jatropha shrub. In Malaysia tweaking the genomes in ways that can make the production and the yield much higher is carried out in the hope to change some of the properties so that the shrub is easier to harvest by Genting Group and by studying the microbial communities that reside in the root zone of the plant as it also concerns the understanding of the processes involved in those risospheres to give insights into ways by which one can devise microbial fertilisers which will reduce the dependencies on petroleum based fertilisers as well as deal with some diseases that blight the plant. But there are still challenges to be overcome before the process can reach the stage of industrialisation by the company in Malaysia.
