Hi All,

I have 3 acres of upland with literally no other water resources other than annual rainfall.I have read quite a bit on teak wood.which would survive with out much of water resources.

My idea is planting bamboo as intercrop and let the output from bamboo being used leased out to the local guys.so tat he could look after the property.

now the problem is
1.weather bamboo survivies on annual rainfall like teak wood.
2.weather teak and bamboo can co-exist.
3.if not could you suggest some alternative to bamboo which can be used as intercropping to teak wook.which can survive on only rainfall and give some decent crop yearly.

Regards
Venkat

Intercropping in teak

Bamboo is not advisable. Both will be advesly affected. Better to go for some annual or perennial herbal crops that too in innitial satge. After the teak plants become 4-5 old, there is remote possibility of any plant survival due to intense competetion by teak for water and nutrients.
Thanks

Venkat,

Teak is suitable only for very rich soil & near by river / hill area where more than 1 meter soil depth is there, it consumes more water. Bamboo is also have the similar requirement. you have to select a suitable crop based on your land type, area etc.,

Both teak and bamboo yields good output with good rainfall or protected irrigation. Both are enemy plants. If you have good rainfall, go for only bamboo. Forget teak. If you have moderate rainfall go for Melia dubia. Dont go for two crops. Go for mono crop plantation. If you give us the exact location and annual rainfall, we can guide you precisely.
