Aromatic oil industry
Aromatic oil industry in India is well established. We are poineer in some oils like sandal,lemongrass,palmarosa.kewara,agarwood, khus (vetiver) and jasmine. Insdia has monopoly in production and trade of mint oil,especially corn mint/Japanesemint/menthol mint. Country exports mint oils and their derivattives to the tune of 12-15000 tones worth Rs.1000crores.
Atleast two dozen esssential oil crops are being cultivated on commercial scale i different parts of country.
However, inspite of all the favourable conditions for cultivation and production of aromatic oils,India lag behind many countries so far as global trade is concerned. The total world market for essential oils and aroma chemicals is estimated to be Rs. 1.50-2.00 lakhs crore. However, our export does not exceed Rs.1200-1500 crore annually.
There are thousands of buyers of essential oils and aroma chemicals in India. Soap, tobacco,agarbatti and pan masala are the major consumer of essential oils.
