I am planning for Grren/Polyhouse for Floriculture (Gerbera, carnations etc.) near Pune. As of now I am in process of searching for land and collecting other information in this area. I am very new to overall agriculture business. As of now I am salaried person. Wish to setup the business and then once have ongoing income then move fulltime. Need help in following queries

1. As I have read may threads, this requires lot of time investment/efforts along with financial investment. Generally how much time initially require? And ongoing basis how much time needs to be invested daily.
2. How many days required for basic setting up of polyhouse, water setup, plantation etc.
3. What is the minimum land where this should be started to extract real benefits out of this business? 5000/10000/20000/40000 sqft?
4. What are other type of flowers which yield good returns?
5. I have heard HTC, Talegaon, Pune is good source for training and other support required.
6. Is getting government subsidy difficult process? Are there other schemes to help.
7. What type of land, water quality, soil quality required?

Have many more questions. But as of now these would be starting points which will help me in deciding if I should jump in this or not. :)

Thanks,
Ajit

attend htc first. then decide. u have to jump into the water to learn swimming. you cannot learn it by dry swimming on land. which is what u are trying to do now with all these questions

Thanks Capt Dilip. My problem is I am still considering if I want to really do swimming or not :). So these many questions. But yes, I am soon planning to go for the HTC course anyways. Above questions were more to understand the risks associated from experienced people like yourself.

Hello sir

Soil and Climate
Sandy loam with good drainage capacity having a pH of 5.5 – 6.0 is more suitable. Temperature should be within the range of 25° C - 27°C to avoid bud abortion/scorching. It is better to raise the crop under poly/green house.

Season
The crop can be cultivated throughout the year.

Propagation and Planting
It can be propagated through suckers and tissue culture plantlets. Raised beds with 4 ft. width and 40 cm height are formed at an interval of 60 cm and planting is done at a spacing of 30 x 30 cm.

Before starting gerbera cultivation, disinfection of the soil is absolutely necessary to minimize the infestation of soil borne pathogens like Phytophthora, Fusarium and Pythium which could otherwise destroy the crop completely. The beds should be drenched / fumigated with 2% formaldehyde (100 ml formalin in 5 litres of water / m2 area) or methyl bromide (70 g / m2) and then covered with a plastic sheet for a minimum period of 2 to 3 days. The beds should be subsequently watered thoroughly to drain the chemicals before planting. Well developed tissue culture plants having 4 -6 leaves can be planted firmly without burying the crown.

Irrigation
Drip irrigation is done once in 2 – 3 days @ 3.75 litre/drip/plant for 15 – 20 minutes. Average water requirement is about 500 – 700 ml/day/plant.

Manuring
Basal
Neem cake 2.5 ton/ha
P - 400 g/100 sq.ft.
MgSo4 - 0.5 kg/100 sq.ft.

Top dressing
Calcium Ammonium Nitrate and Muriate of Potash at the ratio of 5:3 is mixed and applied at 2.5 g/plant/month.

Aftercultivation
1. Hand weeding is done whenever necessary.
2. Remove the flower buds up to 2 months and then allow for flowering
3. Rake the soil once in 15 days to facilitate easy absorption of water, fertilizer and to provide air to the roots.
4. Remove older leaves to facilitate new leaf growth and good sanitation.

Plant Protection
1. To control Nematode - Carbofuran 7-8 kg/ha is applied at the time of planting.
2. Leaf spot - Carbendazim 2 g/lit or Mancozeb 2 g/lit is sprayed alternatively.
3. Leaf miner - Chlorpyriphos 20 EC 2 ml/lit.
4. Glasshouse whitefly - Monocrotophos 36 WSC 2 ml/lit or Neem oil 3 ml/lit.

Season of flowering and Harvesting
When flowers completely open, harvesting is done. Flower stalk is soaked in Sodium hypochloride solution (5-7 ml/lit of water) for 4-5 hours to improve vase life.

Gerbera ready for harvest

Post harvest handling
Harvesting is done when outer 2-3 rows of disc florets are perpendicular to the stalk. The heel for the stalk should be cut about 2-3 cm above the base and kept in fresh chlorinated water. Flowers should be graded and sorted out in uniform batches. Flowers packed individually in poly puches and then put in to carton boxes in two layers.

Bushiness
An abnormality characterized by numerous leaves, short petioles and small laminae, which gives some cultivars of gerbera a bushy appearance known as bushiness. Nodes are not clearly distinguished and no internode elongation is seen.

Stem break
It is a common post harvest disorder in cut gerberas. This is mainly caused by water imbalances. It could be ethylene controlled and associated with early senescence caused by water stress.

Yellowing and purple margin
Nitrogen deficiency causes yellowing and early senescence of leaves. Phosphorus deficiency causes pale yellow colour with purple margin. Increase in levels of nitrogen and phosphorus were found to promote development of suckers and improve flowering in gerbera.

Grading
Based on stem length and diameter, flowers are graded in A, B, C and D.

Yield
The crop yields 2 stems / plant / month. Harvest starts from 3rd month of planting and continued up to two years. Under open condition, 130 -160 flowers / m2 / year and under greenhouse condition, 175 - 200 flowers /m2 / year can be obtained.

Mr. Sunil Agarwal, CFA, Cymbidium Technical Advisor, Darjeeling Gardens Private Limited answers -

• Gerbera Cultivation requires lot of time investment/efforts along with financial investment. Generally how much time initially require? And ongoing basis how much time needs to be invested daily?
Every Agricultural production needs quality time and patience and if it is done under good technology like Greenhouse with proper systems available and Drip irrigation system provided schedule of work done will takes very less effort s and saves time and can fetch quality production and higher yield. Gerbera is 24 to 30 weeks crop and the first flower produced after the 7-8 weeks after plantation when plants are with 14 – 16 leaves. Ongoing basis daily time required per 4000 sqm greenhouse is 4 hrs depending on the number of manpower.

• How many days are required for basic setting up of polyhouse, water setup, plantation etc.?
Polyhouse construction takes 25-30 days including foundation and water set up takes a week, bed preparation and basal treatment takes two weeks and then plantation depend on the area. So we can approximately say it takes around less than two months to set up everything.

• What is the minimum land where this should be started to extract real benefits out of this business? 5000/10000/20000/40000 sqft?
Greenhouse area of 4000 sqm is enough to extract real benefits out of this business.

• How many Gerbera plants can be planted in 1 Acre?
An acre of land is around 4000 sqm of greenhouse area. We can easily plant 24000 nos of
Gerbera plants.

• Initially how much we can get a maximum production from 1 acre of Gerbera Cultivation?
In the first year production we can harvest 1080000 nos of cut flowers.

• What are other types of flowers which yield good returns?
Salvadore, Imperial, Dutch Diva, Dune, Winter Queen, Aura etc. are few varieties yield good returns and are commercially demanded.

• I have heard HTC, Talegaon, Pune is good source for training and other support required. Is it true? Where can I approach to get some quality training in this field?
Sorry I have no idea.

• Is getting government subsidy difficult process? Are there other schemes to help?
NA

• What type of land, water quality and soil quality required Gerbera Cultivation?
The soil should better be highly porous to have better root growth and well drained penetration of roots. Soil pH should be in between 5.5 to 6.5. Water quality should be like the pH 6.5 – 7.0, EC should be <0.7mS/cm, Hardness <200ppm and T.D.S. < 450 ppm.

• Do flowers like Gerbera and Rose have a steady domestic buyer market (not considering the overseas)? And what is market price of during year?
Gerbera is an important commercial flower crop grown throughout the world in a wide range of climatic conditions and is demanded throughout the year both in the domestic as well as international market. Average price throughout the year is Rs. 2.5/stick.

• Is really Gerbera a profitable plant or not?
Gerbera is a profitable plant if it is done in a large scale considering good quality planting material, irrigation system, greenhouse facility and proper management of Fertigation, pest and diseases.
