Coconut farming

Hi,

I'd like to explore the world of agriculture and am considering investing in a coconut farm in / around Pollachi.

I need some inputs on the following questions:

a) Can this be a self sustaining venture (pay for itself and eventually become profitable)
b) What is the optimum acreage - considering I am fresher to the subject
c) Are loans available to purchase such plantations?

If the answer to a) is yes, I could also move to live on the plantation and explore other options.

Is there someone who I can discuss this with in Bangalore?

Appreciate all the help I can get.

Hi,

Well, the best thing would be is you make regular trip to the area you intend to buy, meet smaller farmers who have smaller land holding and talk to them understand the difficutlies first before getting a rosy pic from most consultants. eventually meet bigget players in the market, look at the prospective of by products, coconut oil, coconut cake, coir pit and so on than to just selling the nuts, look at the suitable options of intercropping that can be done in that climate and area.

Also look at the fesiblity of intergrating that with some animals such as, counry chicken, turkey, rabbit or stall fed goat farming.

I guess once you get yourself enough exposure on learning side you can give it go.

Don't just rely on books and words of people who don't belong there. They will help you understand to a certain point, the rest you have to do your homework.

All the best!

If you are interested in discussing in person you can fix up on any day after registering for the chat.
The project will be highly profitable, self sustaining with about 24 % return on investment provided it is planned properly.

Hi KV,

I am also from Pollachi, Nowadays coconut farms are not that profitable if you go with the monthly income calculations. If you look at the income for your investment to be frank at the end of the year you be end of in less 10% which is half or below the normal standards of an investment. But what makes intresting here is the land prices are going up every year, so if you invest you will be profitted when you are selling.

Now the market rates for Coconut farms in pollachi area is too much. It is already on their life time high.

But still whoever trading in the farms making money.

Best of luck.
