There is a short supply of Shikimic acid which is used to produce Oseltamivir phosphate-the antiviral drug for treatment of influenza and this Shikimic acid is extracted from seeds of Illicium species.Illicium verum or star anise should be promoted on large scale in India by Spice Board,National Medicinal Plants Board (NMPB), National Horticulture Board (NHB), National Horticulture Mission(NHM) etc.Shikimic adid is also found in the leaves of Calophyllum apetalum (4%) and Araucaria excelsa(5%).
